Macri Opportunism: Wants To Enact Law To Protect Clarin

Is the Superbowl in the US fully government sponsored? And is all it's ad time used up for pro government propaganda?

Does the US government directly or indirectly have any financial or political control over more than 80% of the US media? I'm genuinely interested to know if this is also the case there in the US.

I suppose you haven't heard about the Justice Department eavesdropping on the AP....

Yes, I did. The Justice Department is obligated under it's mandate to investigate potential leaks of classified information and/or information that involves national security. However the collection of the emails of the AP journalists is highly unusual and might be an overreach of their powers - along with the IRS's possible targeting of specific political groups - which is exactly the reason these stories have stayed on the front pages.

Citizens in the USA and many other countries expect their governments to act within the law and when it does't those citizens get really pissed.

You can support this government, or at least some of their policies, like I do, how they managed with the poor people, subsidios, etc, but I cant deny they have a very maffious way to manage some bussiness, or that they are sometimes autoritharian, but Clarin? theres nothing to support from them!! they just lie, they are a lot more maffia than the government, they have a huge political power, even more than the government (if not, how can you explain the way they stopped the ley the medios).
Yeah man Grupo Clarin definitely has more power than the government

Why do you Americans always succeed in turning every thread here into a discussion about political/economical topics that only have to do with the US???
It has to do with the pot calling the kettle black.

My comments weren't only about the US. I said, "... and many other countries..." I happen to be a citizen of the US and so that's my reference point for political and economic topics. I think it would be beneficial to hear from other people's experiences as well.

To get this back on the OP's original topic: I really wish Bajo would answer the questions that I asked about the press here in Argentina.

A free press should be independent of government and free from monopolies.

Sadly no one in the media industry or government has any interest in makingf this happen , it is rather pathetic watching the usual suspects try to defend their positions.

How anyone thinks it is ´democratic´ that the orwellian govt spends taxpayer money promoting itself, controlling the printing press and restricting freedom to publish prices of basic products is beyond me ! Similarly it is not condusive to diversity of opinion that one media group owns newspapers, tv channels, internet and telephony companies. This is also self evident.

Sadly any concept of a balanced solution is lost in the polemic.

I have a genuine question, is it possible that the current US administration has direct or indirect controlling influence via advertising or other government financial influence on more than 80% of the US media market?

No, they do not have a financial influence over more than 80% of the US media market.

They are not angels by any means, but they do not wield the same financial power percentage wise as the national government does here.

Overheard while walking past the entrance to a mechanic the other day:

Mechanic: "El unico programa independiente que tenemos es 678"
Client: "No, no, 678 es del gobierno"
Mechanic: "Uhhh, no lo crees -- es lo que Lanata quiere que pensas"
Client: "uhhh, ok como dices..." (Saying it in a "whatever, there's no convincing you" type of way)

I realised this is what this country is up against... people who are anti-K tend to read / watch both pro and anti press and programmes. People who are pro-K may read/watch anti media, but they only ever believe one thing. 678 hasn't even attempted to bring a defense against the allegations of money laundering, the best they can do is go after Clarin with accusations of the same thing. They haven't even tried to negate the actions of their own government, their argument is basically well Clarin is doing it too. Two wrongs don't make a right, except in Argentina apparently.

Public Television in a lot of other countries in the world is used as a platform for shows that otherwise wouldn't get funding, and often hosts both pro and anti govt shows. Here in Argentina Public Television is used as a weapon of the govt.

Clarin does have a stranglehold on a lot of the media products here, however at least there is still a voice of opposition. If it weren't for them we'd all be reading / seeing only what the govt wants us to here, as evidenced on 678 itself -- if there is a theme that comes up that they don't want to talk about, they simply do not talk about it at all, same with on the increasingly K C5N. At least at the moment you can flip back and forther between C5N/Canal 9 / Television Publica and TN et alia -- if Clarin goes down, there's not going to be much voice of opposition.
