What do you suggest, building 50 supertankers within 5 years to transport it back to England non-stop? And having the Royal navy escort them all the time?

futboljunkie, I suggest you watch what happens over the coming years. The one guarantee I can give you is that argentina will not be part of the process. They themselves have guaranteed that with their behaviour in the last few weeks. Oil will be extracted, pumped ashore on the falklands and then shipped to the UK. No extra tankers are required. Countries don't use their "own" tankers - it's a commercial market and tankers will be employed from the thousands that already exist. It's like the container ship business...they go where they're needed and get paid for it.

You may not like that, but I see no other possibility.

this is something I found on another site:

Transporting the Oil from Falklands to anywhere in the World is not the economic problem that you think it is. The additional cost per barrel is nugatory with Crude at $80 per barrel.

Plenty of folk live close to Oil Plants without problems. The design ensures that serious accidents are extremely rare.

I have worked in countries with much more basic education systems than Falklands and it takes less than a generation to have the majority of jobs done by Locals.

5 years is not now and in 5 years from now is a long time. Either way there is no way you can transport crude oil in large quanities in a cheap way to England within 5 years.

I don't know how they do it in the UK but I assume that most royalities and taxes will go to the Falklands. Maybe they can send some back to pay for the military pressence there

The majority will, but at the current moment any little helps. And actually five years isn´t a long time.

And as opposed to shipping oil from the middle east? It isn´t that much further from the UK.

Russia, Norway, Holland, Kazachstan, etc

It will never happen offcourse, why would the Falklanders accept to share the money they earn if they can also keep it to themselves?

The most likely scenario after the current standstill with loads of Gaucho populism would be that England and Argentina jointly develop the oil fields and England providing Argentina oil with a long term contract at a discounted rate.

Britain actually had an agreement to share any mineral rights with Argentina. It was the Kircheners who unilaterally withdrew from this agreement.

Bob, I've been searching for info about that. The only thing I came across was not that there was an agreement, but that Cristina withdrew from talks about that, saying that they were going to press their claim for the Falklands.

Do you have any links for more info about this?

I think that should be the future, it doesn't make sense to fight about it. If there is some kind agreement RepsolYPF will also benefit because it gives them more experience in offshore drilling
