Martín Fierro is a 2,316 line epic poem by the Argentine writer José Hernández. The poem was originally published in
two parts, El Gaucho Martín Fierro (1872) and La Vuelta de Martín Fierro (1879).

I bought the book in Spanish for $40 pesos, but you can read the English version online for free.

I have only read the English version of part 1 and less than half of part 2. An extremely well told and very entertaining story. I am studying tango history at CETBA and one of the classes is on the social and economical development of Argentina. Reading and translating the Spanish version is going to take a lot of time but I'm sure it will be well worth the effort. I expect there will by many pleasant tango related discoveries, as well as unpleasant historical revelations in the process. Soon after starting to read the Castellano version the song Nido Gaucho by Carlos Di Sarli (music) & Héctor Marcó (Lyrics) came to mind. Also I gained some insight into meaning of the name of a beautiful Pugliese song written by Mario Demarco called Pata Ancha.

What have you learned from Martin Fierro?
