Don't worry about the onward travel requirement. I fly out of here on return tickets all the time and although I regularly get hassled in the airport on my returns to argentina for not having onward travel documents, I've never not been let on a plane and I've never even heard it mentioned at immigrations here in Argentina.
My advice would be to plan on staying in a hotel for the first 2-3 days while you check out rooms. It will make the whole process a lot more relaxed and give you time to find a good place that you can look at before hand.
