I read this article saying that the government claims the crime rate has NOT increased. I'm actually inclined to agree. I think isolated incidents get blown out of proportion in the press. Not too long ago we had a poll on this site saying not many people have been a victim of crime. What do you guys think? Has the crime increased at all or is it just bad press?

I'm very curious as to how your definition of "not many people" could be 50%? (in BOTH polls about crime in 2012 and 2009):

also the fact that people who are robbed tend not to bother reporting it unless its for insurance reasons as the police here do f all.

Jeebuz! Criminals are already working at full capacity. Give them a break!

Is there any reason to trust any statements made by ex-terrorist "Comandante Teresita" (Nilda Garre) , who became the Minister of Security?

I think you should go back and learn how to read a poll.

Secondly, I don't trust in polls. They usually sway one way or another.

Statistics on crime (or anything else) in Argentina are worth even less than toilet paper...at least toilet paper is of some use.

Anything coming out of the mouths of government officials should be taken with a grain of salt. If you trust the statements of the government officials then, like I told another poster on this forum, you're delusional and naive.

This is the same woman who said 2 weeks ago that break in robberies were up because more people have more cash in their homes. Not the brightest bulb on the porch.

Well this is no big deal perhaps, but I had my purse unzipped and my wallet with my passport taken out of it. (You guys have heard this ad nauseum by now from me--sorry). I didn't even miss the wallet until the next morning. I will spare telling again the way I was set up--and I was set up but was a novice then. It's been tried on me two times since then--unsuccessfully. We live in BA and learn! But the police would NOT report it as a theft. They insisted I had "lost" the wallet although I insisted I knew how it was taken. I had NOT lost the wallet. But that made me wonder how many crimes are not reported as crimes, even when the police are notified.

There is no denying that there is a fair bit of crime in BA but the media definitely hype it up! Like the media anywhere. It definitely has made people fear crime and fear leaving their house, getting into their car etc. When I see a house full to the brim of fences, bars, alarms etc. and then next door there is a house with barely any security it gets me thinking about the state of mind of people here and the fear they feel against the actual crime that happens.

But as someone else said, the statistics or anything that comes from the government isn't worth s@*t!!

I came back to NZ last week, and on the tv news here they were saying that the 300 ruby supporters who went over with the all blacks for this weekends game have had big problems with crime in BSAS - being robbed, pick-pocketed etc. One of the journalists who was reporting on the tour had his $7,000 camera ripped off him by a couple of guys on a motorbike.
Great press for argentina !!!!
