I've traveled a lot, but after my last couple of trips I'm thinking that I might be getting too old for long trips to far away and exotic places. So I want to make my next trip really special because it may very well be my last.
If anyone has an idea of a place that would be suitable as the last stop on my bucket list, let me know. I don't have any limitations except that I get seasick just by being near a ship, so world cruises are out.
One of my high school classmates just went to Antarctica, but that didn't seem to be a lot of fun. A while back I thought of volunteering at an African animal refuge, it sounds romantic but when I looked into it the reality is that I would basically spend my days picking up elephant poop and cutting up buffalo meat for lions.
As expats, you understand wanderlust so I'm looking forward to some great suggestions.

JAPAN. hands down. safest and easiest country to travel through. Breathtaking beauty everywhere, considerate and helpful people, delicious food and amazing creativity. You won't want to come back.
Unfortunately there has been some xenophobia recently due to too many foreign tourists, some of whom have behaved badly.

A friend of mine took a cruise down the Nile years ago, and she was a huge traveller. She said it was the best trip she'd ever taken. I need to save my pennies.

I've always wanted to take a cross-country train trip through Canada or one of those fancy sleeper-car trains in Europe. I believe the packages include stops at various locations along the route. The views are stunning and, some places, the Northern Lights are on display — one of my bucket list items. I'm sure it's very hard to narrow it down with nearly endless options on deck, but I hope you're able to plan and take a fantastic trip.

I’ve stalled my travelling having hit 50 countries before turning 30 last year (my twenties bucket list) and having an accident late last year leaving my wheelchairbound. I’m almost at a year in Argentina this time round and I’m struggling to justify staying much longer with the cost and with my mobility finally improving I don’t expect to stay here too much longer.

I can’t recommend first hand but after returning to Europe for a few months I’m eyeing locations in the Indian Ocean as it’s a totally unknown area to me. Thinking Nosy Be (Madagascar), Reunion, and then Mauritius before heading to South East Asia

I'm sorry about your misfortune but it sounds like you are recovering. Of the 50 countries you visited which one would you like to have a home in when you are older? Which one surprised you the most (favorably)? For me it's the Algarve.

Thank you for your kind words. It was my first Christmas abroad since 1999 and I didn’t expect to spend it in a hospital in Argentina! I’m also very fortunate to have had my surgery free. CABA now charges extranjeros for non-emergency medical treatment as of two weeks ago although from comms with public hospitals here it seems they are still ironing out the details! In the meantime I’ve gone private for physio.

It’s a tricky question since I’ve actually never had my own home. I haven’t even rented since the mid-2010s. I stay with my parents in the UK when I’m there and use Airbnb wherever else I am. I’ll never be able to afford anything reasonable in London so I have no interest in planting roots there. I work remotely but retain my parents house as my residence.

That said, if I wasn’t working while I travel, in terms of where I’d buy a house would certainly be north west Greece. Such a beautiful place with incredible food which is still so cheap! That and quality seafood is my jam

Countries that have surprised me favourably: North Macedonia, Belarus (though that’s not so relevant post-2022), Armenia, and South Korea.

For South America I’ll always have such a soft spot for Peru. It was my first trip after finishing secondary school and those two months exploring are still unparalleled for wanderlust. I adore Jujuy and Salta accordingly for the edge of the Incan culture.

I definitely still need to see the Algarve too! Porto and Lisbon were gorgeous but Faro is still on my list!

That's an interesting list, I will check out those destinations. If you make it to Faro, go an hour west to Lagos, it's amazing. I, too have a keen interest in Inca and other pre-Colombian cultures, I've even spent time at archeological excavations.
