interesting discussion but to add three points:

I applied and received an international driver's license by mail for $11 good for 1 year, not renewable.

As many have pointed out, the IDL is not really necessary.

I've lived here for two years now, coming in and out to renew my visa and drive all the time (my wife is the owner, she's Argentine).

Tourists can rent a car with their valid state's drivers license. Americans living, studying or working in Argentina can get an Argentine drivers license at the following location:

- US passport
