Hello everyone,

can anyone advise the best way to rent in B.A?

I have been here for four days, and already ran into 2 scams.

andrea and daniela on Craig's list.

I am sure you all know them, but if not, they are both a scam, and that is giving them a compliment.

All the rental online agencies want you to rent an apartment online, which is crazy for me, since I am already here, and can go see an apartment.

I am looking for Palermo Soho or Palermo Hollywood.

What would be the best way to find an apartment in those areas?

What should I plan to spend?

Any advice is appreciated.

Sorry to hear about the two scams in four days! I've rented two short-term apartments here. The first was in Recoleta through bytargentina.com. It's a little more expensive to go through an agency, but the owner of the apartment ended up trying to get more money out of us, so we were really lucky that byt could get our deposit back. I would recommend using byt if you don't mind paying a bit more. It's one of the lower-cost rental agencies I've found.

The second apartment is in Palermo Soho, and we found it through craigslist. It's definitely a risk, because you never know if the owners will turn out to be as nice and accommodating as they seem at first. So far ours is working out really well, and I know some other people who have had luck on craigslist. I've also heard good things about soloduenos.com and zonaprop.com. Feel free to PM me if you want any more details! Good luck!

Lauren

When we were renting short term, ByTArgentina was always a good service for us. They will arrange to show you apartments if you're in town, so you can make sure you know what you're getting into. Soloduenos is another good site. Good luck!

I have rented several apts in BA, all off craigslist.. But i never hand over any money before i move in and get the key..
Always view the apt before.. Alot of ads/pic are not what the real thing is.. Even things like what neighbourhood, size of bed etc they will lie about.. If they lie about that what else will they lie about ?
Go with gut feeling, I have had the feeling with a couple of places that they were going to rip me off, or the owner seems a bit pushy, or wanted a deposit there and then, or a large deposit (no more than 1 month rent - i usually only pay 2 weeks)... so after seeing the apt didnt contact again.. Then have seen on here that others were ripped off..
Also negotiate, especially after the busy tourist period (dec to march), and if you are renting for more than a month..
My last apt they wanted US$550 per month, but i got it for US$425 by saying i would stay at least 2 months.. I ended up staying 5..
Also dont rush into it.. take your time to look at a few, and walk around the neighbourhood where they are, check for shops/supermarkets that are close, street noise (i usually try to see apts between 5 and 7pm because this is the worst time for traffic)...

With all due respect, why use online agencies or craigslist then? Call inmobiliarias, or visit their websites. You could try the Argenprop database http://www.argenprop.com/ , see what interests you, and then call the inmobiliaria offering it, then visit the place. They are running an official business; I'm not saying you should expect Mother Theresa, but scams are definitely not their plan.

What should I plan to spend?

It depends on what you are looking for. Start looking on Argenprop and you will find price ranges.
