Richard Stallman, founder of the FSF, robbed in Argentina

All politicking about UBA aside, a "man didnt get his rucksack stolen"..or just get his rucksack stolen. A prestigious speaker was robbed on academic turf which most people would presume is safer than a church. It's cultural norms at work.. and being robbed at somewhere you have bene invited to share your knowledge is not something a speaker, prestiguous or not, expects in a leading university. That's why it's worth posting and all those responses to the blog and here telling him he was at fault for carrying his documents are so misplaced..why does the victim have to the one to blame when it's sick individuals who don't know the difference between right and wrong have the issue?!!

I never said he was at fault or was to blame. I didn't use the active voice ("GET his rucksack stolen"). And I did not minimize the theft with a word like "just". All I said was, "A man's knapsack was stolen."

It's terrible that someone stole his stuff. It's embarrassing for the people and the institution who invited him. But from there to a discussion about the Red Menace is a bit of leap, don't you think?

Hey, don't freak out, ok? Stallman, a yankee imperialist (who has a very high earning ability) had his property redistributed to a poor argentine fellow (someone who obviously had a greater need) by the socialists in the UBA. According to the posters on this thread we should all be applauding this, I think.

I retract everything I said previously about the red menace. We can see that socialism is working just fine at the UBA.

This is a really solid point, and all the talk of "this could have happened anywhere," implicitly blaming Stallman for being so naïve as to think that he wouldn't be robbed is actually sick. It's a huge embarrassment for the UBA. This is very, very different from being robbed on the street, or in a cafe, and I do think it reflects poorly both on the UBA's administration, and its student body.

That was my point from the very beginning of this entire discussion. There's no way this would have happened at the UCA, UADE, or San Andres. This is the kind of thing that only happens at the UBA because of the type of students who go there.

Did the possibility that it wasn't a student ever cross you mind?

But don't fret EL Ex, you'll be able to afford to send your offspring to UCA. I hope they enjoy their mandatory theology classes. :)

To anyone who thinks the communists are nothing to worry about, you should study up on something called the Holodormor where upwards of 60 MILLION persons living in Ukraine we starved to death and systematically murdered or put in gulags to be worked to death by the nice commies in that country.
