In seriousness though, the BBC will rarely publish a story they haven't independently verified using their own reporters. And sometimes when they do publish a report they'll pull it if they feel they're on dodgy ground. It's one of the reasons why they sometime seem so slow off the mark compared to other news organisations who are happy to report unsubstantiated rumours and hearsay - which make for great ratings, and more advertiser dollars. Not having to compete for ratings fundamentally changes the way that news is reported. The BBC are pretty much unique in the world in terms of how they operate.

Possible to check too the media comments regarding Iraq 10 years ago & the alleged WMDs.

The Iraq war was one of the rare events in which the BBC was found to have breached it's charter for impartial reporting, and was perceived to have taken sides (against the government).

It's a strange institution and not without its problems but I have enormous respect for the BBC.

In the US where I am now, they're calling it a "change of government" and not a coup, as the military is saying that it is to support a regime change. A former Supreme Court Judge is interim head.remarkably, it seems to have the popular support. The people are saying its about them not wanting Morsi, who was elected with 50% support so always iffy. The military is being supported by a broad cross section of secular and non secular leaders and former Noble prize winners!
