Road Trip In Argentina

I too agree that Salta and surrounds is well worth exploring. If you're driving up from Buenos Aires a stop at Cordoba and a couple of the surrounding towns e.g., Alta Gracia is also worth it in my opinion. I took the overnight bus to Salta which was completely fine but it does take 22 hours, so of course if you're short on time flying is probably the better option.

If you drive directly from Buenos Aires, just be prepared for LOTS of Pampa before you reach anything else. We drove to Salta and loved it, but I would be tempted to start in the mountains outside of the city of Cordoba and drive south toward Patagonia. Enjoy.

If you guys drive by Chivilcoy,BsAs province and wanna stop by for a beer or ten lemme know, got room and grill

I will recommend a couple road trips to you that I have written about: 1) Ruta 40, http://southernconeg...road-trip.htmland 2) the Andean Northwest, which I have covered in two separate entries: http://southernconeg...lta-part-1.html and http://southernconeg...ta-part-2.html Those aren't the only choices, but they're my favorites.

As far as renting a car, things can really fluctuate. Generally, I think, you can get a better deal from a local agency, but you need to certain of their road-service reliability in case something breaks down.
Your article on getting to the Falklands is interesting and a trip I would love to do.

Thanks to everyone for all the information.

Ajoknoblauch - Seems like there is a wealth of useful information on your blog. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe Ajoknoblauch and/or TomAtAlki could answer this question...in your experience renting a car here, did you have to bring the car back to the exact location where you picked it up or were you able to drop it off at another branch of the rental car company?

I rarely rent cars in Argentina, because I own one in Chile. Expect big dropoff charges if returning at a different location, though.

Yes, we brought back the car to the same location, leaving it at another increases the price by a lot . Also, we mostly used Europecar.
