KatharineAnn,

"Really also it is well known that high fructose corn syrup is a LOT worse for the body than regular sugar, as the body has more trouble metabolizing it and it turns into fat."

i think that's wrong. all sugars are really bad sugars. all of them.

Butterfly, you are wrong in this case.

HFCS is worse than sugar. Period. Read study upon study.

besos

I think it depends on the barrio. For example, if you go to some of the higher income barrios, Recoleta, Barrio Norte, Belgrano, yes there is still junk food around however there are healthy snacks all over such as cereal bars, granola, wheat crackers, mixed nuts, trail mix and a lot of dieteticas. If you go to some lower income areas the offerings are mostly low quality alfajores, all kinds of cheap candy and lots of sodas and sweetened beverages. However the same applies in New York City where I come from, on the upper east and upper west side, you can get junk food too, however there are tons of health food stores with a huge variety of healthy sweets, if you go to the south bronx, hardly any health food stores and mostly corner "bodegas" as we call them that sell Twinkies, hostess cakes, all kinds of sodas, chips, etc. Some of this about giving sweets to kids has to do with tradition but it also has to do with nutritional education.

There are many people here who are perpetuating the myth of the svelte argentinian and the barbarian foriegner who eats fast foods . I know Buenos Aires very very well and there are just as many fatties ( me included) and obese people than any other western society . I for the life of me do not see Anorexic woman but I see very obese people on a regular basis and it is all to do with diet .

You are what you eat or do not eat and in the case of skinny woman and men in Argentina in many cases this is not natural as they take fat burning pills in large qualities to avoid partaking in their sweet tooth.

I have noticed the last years a huge increase in the consumption of gasesosas and speed drinks here that are sugen laden. The average diet of porteno youth is not to be proud of and I am seeing many obese teenagers here due to their fast food diets.

Argentina is imho one of the best coutries in the world to eat a healthy diet if one desires with raw vegetables and organic meats in moderation. Unfortunately the parents and the government are not doing more to educate the youth here as this is a timebomb waiting to explode.

I strongly disagree. Sugars are not as fattening as high fructose corn syrup. Also, sugar in itself isn't bad at all. It's just bad when you have too much of it, much like fats. Fats are also good for you, in the correct amount.

I do feel like I'm living in a different city than many of you. Of course there are fat people, I just feel like the ones I see are not as frequent and not AS fat as I was used to in the US. This is something all of my coworkers from the US always comment on when they return to Buenos Aires ("Wow, people are so thin here!" etc..)

The problem with this comparison is degrees only . As stated before Argentina is in the top 20 most fattest nations of the world and unfortunately too many people live in denial of their weight and their nation as the case of Argentina .

If I hear one more tourist say that Argentines are slim based on a few blocks of walking in Recoleta and Palermo Soho I will personally take him on a fat tour of Buenos Aires and he will never utter those words again;)

Agreed - it's like spending 2 weeks in Manhattan and saying "The vast majority of Americans are skinny." Most NYers are in shape and not overweight but you can't extrapolate one neighborhood or city to the population of an entire country. Yes, there is a higher percentage of skinny people in Cap Fed - especially in Recoleta or Canitas, etc. Leave those neighborhoods, leave Cap Fed and the reality is different.

Again, 13th fattest country in the world. Facts are facts.

I would bet that if you take out "Cleaning ladies" and "Old men", Argentina would drop to at least 17th.

When I first arrived in Buenos Aires, I thought that everyone here was fairly thin, but after some time, I guess your ideas of fat and thin change and I started to notice lots of fat people, although not so many morbidly obese people - that is still a pretty rare sight.

Then last month I went to Brazil, and it made me realize how thin the Argies really are. There were lots of round people in Brazil, and they all wore skimpy swimsuits anyway. I loved it.

I've read several people on this board deny the presence of anorexia and I just can't believe that! They must be Argentine so they think it's normal, but really, there is so much anorexia here it is frightening.

I believe that your spell-check changed what you were trying to say. I'll correct it for you.

"Again, 13th fattest country in the world. Fats are fats."

Don't mention it.
