Telephone Cards

I have been trying to use a new telephone card to call the U.S. to no avail. A friend tried to use a card, that was issued by a different company than mine, to call Austria and wasn't able to do so.
I'm wondering if others have had problems? I used a card to call the U.S. on Sunday evening without a problem.
