The Best Reason Now To Be An Expat In Argentina...

I haven't sought health care in the USA since 1999

Well, then, you are an expert.

I just signed up for "Obamacare" this week.
What I actually did was sign up for a new policy with my existing health care provider that I have been using for over ten years.
Under the ACA, I get a lower deductible, better coverage, and I will save thousands of dollars a year in premiums.
I will continue to go to my exact same doctors. NO death panels. NO socialism, although I do bring them baskets of apples from my trees when they are ripe.

Massachusetts has had the Romney/Republican forerunner of Obamacare for over five years now- no socialist takeover, no death panels, it works fine, people like it.
Vermont is going full cleveland socialist, with a single payer no insurance company system.

GF's mother is something like 80 years old and has all the things that go with old age. Doctor regularly visits her at HOME, she uses a walker, cannot navigate so well. When in the hell was the last time anyone ever heard of a USA doctor make a "House Call" to accommodate a person's disability, especially on Medicare?
Certainly unheard of in the states. However the national health system in Japan do just that you mention here, more so to remote islands inhabitants than the metropolis or bigguer cities. So kudos to the Argentinean medicine system..

Ries-san, How is it that your new conversion to "Obamacare" saves you money in yearly premiums.?
My case: Iam with CA's Kaiser healthcare policy and right now paying monthly rate of US$975.00 then if and when I convert it to the new ACA or " obamacare " my premium goes to almost US$1200.00 per month.
Therefore Iam trying to find another health care provider and btw, have been with same hospital institution over 20 years. Bummer !

As I said, what I really did was get a new policy with my current provider.
My previous policy had a really high deductible- and my new policy is roughly $200 a month more. But the savings in deductible means I will save a thousand or two a year right there, even after paying the $200 more. Then, there is the fact that I pay for my two son's policies- Because they make so little money- one is a full time college student, the other a 19 year old with part time jobs- I will save another couple thousand there, as their new policies are completely paid for by the low income subsidy of obamacare. that is assuming neither uses any medical care- again, they had $3000 to $5000 deductibles before, now $500- so if my younger one breaks his arm again skateboarding (which he has already done 4 times) I could stand to save another couple grand right there.
Also, this year at least, my income has been low enough that I, too, receive a subsidy for my health care. The economy in the US is finally coming back, and as a self employed person, my income can vary quite a bit, so its possible next year I will make more, and subsequently, pay more.
But as of right now, I estimate my savings for 2014 to be in the range of $3000 to $6000 US dollars, depending on health issues.

This is pretty typical for individual policies- IF you actually have health care needs, which, unfortunately due to age I sometimes do, the new, mandated lower deductibles mean that even with the higher monthly premiums, most individuals will save quite a bit.

Viva Vermont. The current system is broken. After AHC it's still broken. Evolution is a long hard road when it's paved with Obstructionists.

This is a very good example of using words without meaning.

The previous system was acceptable to at least 80 percent of those who had insurance.

Evolution does not happen in ten or twenty years, let alone two or three.

The "obstructionists" oppose Obamacare for a very good reason.

They want to keep their plans and their doctors.

Just as Obama promised.

Too bad, he was lying.

If Steve repeats it often enough, he believes himself.

Even if Steve is correct about those who had insurance before - a questionable supposition - his "analysis" ignores the tens of millions unable to obtain insurance without bankrupting themselves and, then, going bankrupt anyway (or dying, or both) when they had a medical condition or emergency. That's without mentioning those uninsurable because of "pre-existing conditions" such as that hangnail from 20 years ago.
