The Good Food in BA Thread

Tenku do pretty decent sushi at sensible prices.
Sarkis is good lebanese fare, about the only example of its kind here.
Peruvian food can be hit and miss, had great dishes at Bardot though (mero a lo macho was amazing)
Standard probably my favourite spot for argentine food (lamb & slow cooked beef both great)

French, Indian & Asian food are best prepared at home. There's a good fishmonger near me in la imprenta, but you have to pay a small fortune...

Never tried the delivery services but hear good reports, if you live in their catchment area you might find quality better than whats available locally.

I was in the mood for Peruvian and went to Bardot tonight. Had the Ceviche Nikkei and the Mero a lo Macho as you recommended. The ceviche nikkei was really great! I was very hungry so who knows if it was really as good as I thought, but I'll definitely go back for it. The mero a lo macho was also very good, and for BA it was a surprise...maybe not the best choice, though, on such a hot, humid night, it's a pretty heavy dish. But it was very good and I'd recommend it too, thx for the suggestion...

Been to America and I though the food was awful, does that make it bad? No just not to my taste. Leave your prejudices behind when you travel.
If you cannot enjoy the local fare that is your problem, not the local cooks.

You're insane or maybe when you ate there you just had MacDonald's and Applebees. The US has hands-down the best cuisine in the world right now.

The beef in Argentina is outstanding and the beef in the US will never compare to it, I'll say that. But I can't eat beef here every day. This thread is about LOCAL cuisine that's good so I don't know what your problem is. If you have particular suggestions, go ahead. I've traveled in many places and always eat the local cuisine, and I can say that Argentina is somewhere on the level of Panama in how bad the restaurants are generally. I'm trying to find exceptions!

By the way...what is Filo? Is that the restaurant at the Circolo Italiano on Libertad? It's complete garbage!! And overpriced...nice room though...

I agree with many of your statements Pandulf
Food comes from the heart and requires many hours of preparation to create those wonderful dishes. My mother was the best greek cook and her food would make any anorexic fat in no time.

There are some good restaurants that I recommend

Japanese To Restaurant- Arevalo and Costa Rica Palermo Hollywood excellent sushi, great drinks and fantastic ambience.

Sarkis Restaurant- Arabian Armenian Thames and Cordoba Palermo . Excellent food huge portions

Les Anciens Combattets French Santiago de estero 1000 Constitution. By far the best french restaurant in Argentina .

Primavera Trujillana Peruvian . The best and the cheapest try it and you will keep going back Franklin D roosevelt 1600 Belgrano

What on earth are you talking about? Almost all the recommendations here have been places with a predominantly local clientele. .

Exactly, so how can the original posts statement "It's a given that food here is awful and the Argentines have no idea how to cook",be true?

For meat:
I've eaten at a LOT of different steakhouses. While Cabrera in Palermo is good, it's packed and there's a line around the corner most nights.

>this is because its in the lonely planet, not because its the best. step away from the herd.

Des Nivel: unreal value and great meat (only get meat the sides are crap)

la Brigada: the staff are assholes and they will try to rip you off
i like the wild boar sausage, chicken with spicy tomato sauce, lomo with pepper sauce, papas provenzal, rucula salad

Parillia Del Plata: a really nice place with great staff. lots of locals and only a few pesos more than Des Nivel

el Historico: great meddalions of lomo with pepper sauce and a nice chicken with red pepper sauce dish

check out:
habibi
cafe san juan
hong kong style
kansas
tandoor
bereber

astrid & gaston: heaven
sipan: only the fish and salditos
osaka: only the fish dishes
status: salditos and rice dishes (good value)

I from California, so i know not to expect the same level of produce and asian/mexican food. So I really dont understand why this NYC guy thinks this is a sushi town... when in rome stick with beef and peruvian

So nutty. We are beyond spoiled for every kind of food in the US. There are few places in the world with as many excellent options (I've heard good things about Canada, Australia and Hong Kong).

But, whatever, if you like crappy Argy food, that's cool. To each their own.

Ask anyone abroad where they would like to go for some good food and the last country they would probably name would be the USA.

When I read posts like this one I can't understand that some people from the USA wonder why so many around the World dislike them...

Where did you eat at diners like ihop and denny's?

Las Vegas has some of the best restaurants around and Chicago, NYC, San Fransisco and finally L.A. have some amazing restaurants. My friend in Los Angeles won a James Beard award in 2007

I always laugh when people say American food suck. The same can be said for most places if you are uninformed. Next time do yourself a favor and pick up a Zagat's guide.

Feel free to scan this list and see the restaurants in the USA that won Michelin awards

I can only assume you are not a foodie, so perhaps these awards are over your head.

And yet Mcdonalds is the most popular restaurant in the world. I guess most of the world has no idea what good food is.

Bardot is one of my favorite places. I've mentioned before I think it's an underrated (or not rated) gem. And the bartender makes the best pisco sours in town.
