The historic houses in Valparaiso are beautiful. I also like the historic houses around the 10th region from ~1860-1900. With Chilean wood houses I was referring to the average house built in the last 50 years in Chile. Most of them are architecturally pretty boring.
It's true that, except for a handful of truly creative commercial and residential designs, contemporary Chilean architecture is mediocre at best. New housing developments in and outside Santiago are cookie-cutter places, but they're probably seismically sturdier than earlier ones.
