What towns in Argentina would you recommend that is off the beaten tourist path yet provides enough stuff to see and nightlife I wouldn't be bored?

La Plata. Very few tourists venture there yet it is only an hour from BA and it has a nice population of young Argentines from all over the country due to the national university (UNLP). Lots of bars and boliches, quiet, slightly cheaper than BA.

Rosario? It felt like a very "local" city to me -- lots of culture, dining, beautiful architecture, etc, but I didn't see another foreigner the whole time I was there.

Tandil, aprox. 5hs away from BA.

It's located in a valley, with lovely sights and lots of outdoor stuff to do. As in La plata, there are young university students living there from all over the country, but I wouldn't expect to find many of them as it is winter break right now -until 3rd week of august.

Of course, the weather is very cold during the winter, so be prepared for that!

Cordoba. I was there for 8 months and hardly saw tourists. Mind you that was 2 years ago. My spanish improved drastically and the night life is just as good as buenos aires.

Second that, plus nearby costal town Necochea.
If you are a single man, I can also recommend las chicas Tandilenas - one of the best combinations of immigrants, very beautiful, second only to rosarinas (Rosario).

I highly recommend Rosario. It's often referred to as the Chicago of Argentina but it's more like Buenos Aires Lite. It's about 4 hours from BA. The accent is essentially the same, lots of culture, great theaters like El Circulo, Tango dancing and great parks! El Parque de Independencia is probably my favorite park in all of Argentina. The downtown has a big city feel and there is tons of stuff to do. Great shopping, great food! The largest Casino in Latin America is there as well.

I am there right now actually. Cordoba is also good but pretty far from BA. I have heard great things about Mendoza as well.

I should have added that I never see Americans here. I have yet to see another American in all the times I have been to Rosario. I hear there are others but I haven't met one.

I live in La Plata, so there'll be at least two of us. :D

It's a nice place, people are friendly, it's a little cheaper for most things and there's plenty to do. One thing to keep in mind if your Spanish isn't so hot is that you won't encounter nearly as many English speakers -- certainly not like tourist barrios.
