Tucker Carlson in Buenos Aires

As for the interview with Milei, what matters is not how much 'credibility' Carlson has, rather how much credibility Milei has. I watched the interview to see what Milei had to say. Carlson just asked the questions. Why dwell on Carson rather than debate Milei's POSITIONS?
The average Argentine doesn't get their news from Tucker Carlson or likely even know who he is. American expats in Argentina have any number of Argentine or international news sources and are likely more open to receiving their news from non-US sources compared to the average American.

Carlson matters in this in that for many Americans his take will be the only take they have of Milei. If so, it's reasonable to believe that if they do get other takes on Milei it will be from those similar to Carlson.

So what? Who cares what a bunch of Americans think about Milei or Argentine politics in general? I think it's important for US citizens to have a credible picture of Milei as opposed to picture painted by a non-credible source. It matters if Carlson and his backers can make Argentina and Milei seem important enough to American voters who will be voting for elected officials who will be deciding on where and how to distribute US foreign aid. The right wing in America has made Putin/Russia, Zelenskyy/Ukraine a domestic issue and are actively trying to eliminate aid being sent to Ukraine while supporting Putin and being open to Russian propaganda spread on social media whose purpose is to weaken US democracy and democracies in general. Someone like Tucker Carlson with his desire to push his agenda at the expense of facts can impact US foreign policy which has an outsized influence on the rest of the world. The right makes clear it's desire to eliminate NATO and support authoritarian regimes throughout the world. I'm not a fan of authoritarianism or fascists and would rather not see the US try to exert any influence in this part of the world that encourages authoritarians and potential dictators like they did in Chile, Guatemala, and other countries in the region. That would be easier to do with public support and people like Tucker Carlson actively contribute to those efforts.

That said, I'm not a fan of the US exerting any kind of outsized influence in this part of the world and have no problem with the idea of a lessened US impact throughout the world. I'm just very anti-fascist/anti-authoritarian.

Who is on your list of actual journalists that don't do propaganda puff pieces?
Carlson's intent isn't to ask questions that challenge Milei's positions, but to shape his responses into an easily digestible format for his audience.

My idea of actual journalists are one's who are either small and independent and preferably don't work on behalf of billionaires who own media conglomerates who are more interested in trying to push their agendas then they are in journalism - admittedly increasingly hard to find these days no matter if they favor a particular side of the spectrum or try to play it down the middle. Media is increasingly owned by fewer, incredibly wealthy and powerful people who control conglomerates and media syndicates and less often now by local and regional interests.

I also prefer to see political figures interviewed by journalists/talking heads/etc. who represent the other side of the spectrum. Instead of a Biden cheerleader toss softballs I'd rather see Carlson interview Joe Biden and see if Biden and his ideas can hold their own when his feet are held to the fire and he's asked tough questions by someone who has no interest in making him look good. I'm also a fan of actual debate where opposing sides can present their arguments as opposed to what passes for debate these days which is more about generating soundbites and gotcha moments. Something more along the lines of the Gore Vidal/Wm. F. Buckley debates or even back to when Lincoln and Douglas would debate all day.

This makes no sense at all. All that matters is what Milei said. Carlson did not speak for him. Furthermore, everything I have read in English has been critical of Milei. He is routinely blasted as a right winger in the foreign press. What are you proposing - that Milei only be interviewed by people who dislike him and oppose his ideas?

If only the US media would ask Biden quedstions like that! It's obvious that Carlson asked him critical questions and got highly articulate and clear answers. A pity some people on this site can't discuss issues.

Man, oh man, it is so disillusioning when somebody you really admire says something that you not just disagree with, but actually find downright repulsive. The things Pilger says about Riefenstahl in the first paragraph of the story you linked just massively disappoint me.

I disagree. If it were only important what Milei, or any politician, said then they wouldn't surround themselves with spokespeople and communications directors or send people from their administration/campaign to do media interviews armed with prepared talking points. Past right wing populist movements have realized the value of this to such a degree that they've appointed a Minister of Propaganda in order to most effectively craft their message. The interviewer and the medium is just as important as the message itself.

Tucker Carlson has a large audience. Milei knows this. This is why he granted an interview to a partisan entertainment mouthpiece like Carlson who is primarily interested in forwarding his (shared) agenda instead of a legitimate journalist who is less of a partisan and more of a centrist journalist. One is a tool to be wielded by the populist politician and their campaign/administration to further their cause, the other is likely to be branded 'an enemy of the people,' if they say anything that is not in complete lockstep with the politician, questions, or criticizes them in any way.

If Carlson isn't that all important than why did Milei even bother with him? Why not grant the interview to someone on Telemundo who could also reach a US audience? If Carlson isn't at all important and Milei is all that matters why not just bypass him entirely and put out a video on YouTube or social media? The reason is because Milei wants access to Carlson's audience, wants their support, wants them to push for him in the US should he gain power, and probably wants some of Carlson's wealthy backers to back him financially as well. In a presidential election nothing is left to chance and no decision is made without reason. Certainly not a decision as important as how Milei wants to be portrayed to the right wing populist movement in the US.

And if everything you have read in English has been critical of Milei are you including Carlson in that, or are you not counting that because it was a video and not a written piece? Milei, like any right wing populist, is not looking to swing the opinions of independents or those on the left. Right wing populists carefully craft their message to appeal to their base and paint everyone else as the enemy. Milei wants access to Carlson's right wing audience.

If people believe Twitter views are accurate (not just for Tucker's vids, but for anything posted there) I have a bridge to sell them. People have done some experiments such as creating new accounts, making them private with 0 followers, and then making a single post and it showing multiple views. Also, apparently the analytics is driven not by interactions (i.e. clicking on content or pausing scrolling to watch/read) but rather pure views, i.e. by this logic I read every article on La Nación because I scrolled down to the bottom. It's meant to juice numbers for advertisers since so many have left following Musk's bungling of running Twitter.

All that being said, I do believe millions of people have watched Tucker's interviews, just nowhere near the numbers shown.

Quel choc! The city filled with the rich and right wingers of LatAm likes Milei. Who'da thunk it?

Youtube is more popular than twitter and on the tucker carlson interview there its only 1.5 million views .

as a north american whose owned an apartment in buenos aires for 18 years and has to deal with tucker carlson’s fox news commentary i think he has made my life difficult. remember your having an intellectual conversation. the proud boys and oath keepers take his comments as factual. and they repeat it as the truth. its not innocent. they are extreme right. they dont read and get their views from fox news. i can help you understand by george bush senor. he was accused of supporting “the new order”. timothy mcveihey blew up a federal building killing 268 federal employees. its the same group trump woke up. not going any direction good. on politics the economist recomended it better to default on the debt. i personally dont understand why the central bank is at fault. you asked for the loan and complain about repaying it. my info on milei is he wants to make it legal to sell body parts, lower requirement s for gun ownership, dollarize the currency at a cost of 40 billion. agentine debt is 44 billion to the central bank. you wont be able to print your way out of local debt. go bullrich. thanks for listening, you now you know how one north american thinks. i welcome all info that can help me understand what i dont understand

As someone who strongly dislikes the oligarchy, whether it be MSNBC and Joe Biden, Musk and Carlson and Milei, or FOX and Trump, I'd appreciate even a veneer of tough questions, i.e. someone asking Joe Biden about how he reminds people of their elderly parents/grandparents sundowning, telling the same damn story about the paint store on Main Street at dinner, or someone asking Milei how he plans to implement his agenda if he doesn't have congress nor the dollars to do so, or someone asking Elon Musk why his daughter hates him so much she'd rather not inherit billions and change her name, etc than the softball, milquetoast questions we see.

I'm not naïve, I realize the media's job is manufacturer consent for their clients, whether it be FOX for Trump or CNN for Biden, or LN for Bullrich, but at least pretend you're not paying them to do this, get an audience that normally would never hear you speak and make you uncomfortable. As much as I hate Patricia Bullrich at least she goes to Chaco and let's people call her a murderous c*nt to her face, you don't see Biden or Trump doing that, talk about snowflakes.
