Typical Street Scene - Photo I Took Today

Really? Ban displays?
Your kid is going to be exposed to porn in the internet anyway. Educate him.

That said, I also think you are a bunch of prudes :)

It's been 10 yrs and I've never gotten used to the blatant images an all media here. The television ads are bad enough, the actual swimsuit ads aren't too different to the pics displayed here! The theatres along Corrientes avenue are another eye opener for my own 7 yr old son!

Yes I can concur there's obvious sex for sale in both but in Bsas theres a naked ass on display on tv before 9pm, on the back of buses, on every kiosko beside a school.

That's like two years I got rid of my TV but I recall "bailando por un sueno" which is still aired it seems. It's a quite explicit show with this anecdot happening every 6 months : the "tit" of a Vedette "escaping" during the dancing show (Jannneeeettt :D).
Argentineans are quite obsessed with the body, like the Brazilians, but in a very different way.

Well yeah Guillo, he will be exposed to many things in the future. He will have sex one day as well, but I won't be having sex in front of him just because he will be faced with that in the future as well, don't you think?

I can educate him on many things for sure, but the problem here is that parents don't have a choice. You have those nasty ads/magazines all over the place and I have to explain things which I'd rather explain when the time comes.... like those transvestites we pass by each night on our bus route in Palermo... those guys are naked (some have boobs & penises showing - yeah, both things at the same time, explain that!!!), they strike poses, stick their asses out... don't you think it is too much for a child? Having to explain the concept of prostitution to your kid?

My 7-year old took one of this apparently when I wasn't looking (I found it in his drawer...) I don't know if I should laugh or cry....

The visual aggression is too much ---- but every time I comment this to my Argentine friends they think I am being a prude.

I don't care if my kids see naked bodies at all, but not this way .... this is so disgusting to me.

What do you think?

I wouldn't worry too much, the fact that your son hid it in the drawer means he knows it is not a 'normal', 'bikini-ad' photo. Kids are atracted to things that are 'forbidden' or 'bad'. That does not mean they aprove or think its normal.

Unfortunately you can't protect them from this, only educate them how to handle it.

I was especially worried about MTV when we were still living in Europe : Did you notice the really 'sexy' ladies dancing almost naked in the hip/hop - rap clips??? The camera always focussing on 'the right spots'? For some reason, when my son was little, he was a real hip hop fan...

This is just something that you have to deal with now that you have left "Disney World", otherwise known as the USA.

Er... I have not left Disney World. I was born and raised in Arg. I lived abroad for 12 years and I came back to find that everyone and everything has become "vulgarized" - and people think that means being "progre".

Imagine going back to the US, turning the TV on and finding out that everyone speaks like Snoop Dogg...

Its your call what you explain and when, and what values you teach to your son. Its not your call what should be allowed and what not, and specially not, to make everything "kid safe" limiting the options of consenting adults in order to delay explaining things you don't feel comfortable with.

Kind of reminds me of the "Will anyone think of the children!!!" attitude.

I don’t know what you are referring to with the “think of the children” remark. Well yeah, children are the future and it is our responsibility to protect them and provide for a healthy environment. I am not talking about denial - just talking about unnecessary vulgarity and visual polution.

Speaking of attitudes, yours reminds me of “well, as long as no one bothers me, I don’t give a damn about everyone else”. Would it hurt you to regulate certain commercials and put those magazines a little higher/cover them? No.

I guess you will understand when you have your own children.
