There are many successful socialist states, most notably in Scandinavia, where the standard of living is the highest in the world, but they don't have to blow their own horn. Personality cults like Chavismo do.

Still, its better this demagogia, personality cult, with propaganda and all, that the former governments Venezuela had. After all, it is closer to socialism (if you like, closer to Scandinavias socialisms) this government than the others.

From a social point of view, and talking strictly of social indicators (which means in other words, quality of life) Venezuela is far better now than before Chavez. Of course its not an accident, it is the country in Latam that invests the most in social plans. There are a lot of well known political scientists, sociologists, social assistants, even doctors, progres, or who like left government ideologies, that left their countries of origin to go to Venezuela to support Chavez and the XXIst century socialism. I know people, proffesors I had, that went there to work, and they lived very well here. There are lots of intelectuals from all over the continent that support them too. Even in the media (not a field where they have a lot of representation).

On professors...my parents were professors at the best university in Venezuela. All their colleagues are gone - left the country. They can't even pay their salaries anymore. Last time I went, they traded horses for lawn mowers to cut all the grass. Droppings everywhere. Classes are constantly cancelled and not cancelled until a certain date...cancelled til they can figure out when they can open, etc. my friends have been in college forever...and social investment? Let's just say a lot of talk and a lot of papers where it's written but is it real or a front? Guess.

I read a lot of papers on te web, plus some other information from IMF, World Bank, the IDH from UN (where Venezuela is by far the Latin American country that made more progression in the last years)... Maybe you cant see it because doesnt touch you or the people you know, but lots of people are getting out of poverty in Venezuela...

I doubt that Argentina and/or Venezuela will ever reach Scandinavian levels of success.

Socialism is impossible it is the brain food of ignorance and lacks any serious social evaluation. Bottom line.. given the opportunity the vast majority of humans will default to utter laziness and produce nothing while consuming more and more. Only a socially ignorant or insane person would go along with such folly. Look around you day in and day out, what do you see? People (Not all) sitting on their tails producing nothing complaining about their problems/lack and preaching or believing in socialism. Blaming others etc... The rich made us like this... ROFLOL get a life! For some of us adversity is what drives us to succeed even in the worst of circumstances. I have not met a single over comer that believes in socialism. But I hear socialismo dribbling out of the minds and mouths of losers all the time.
