What exactly is El Dia de la Mujer?

In Russia, March 8th is also celebrated as women's day/mothers' day (we don't have a separate Mothers' Day), and has been for about a century.
 
Día de la mujer is an international holiday. We had it in Mexico to and it was called "día internacional de la mujer". I know so cause it ruins my birthday every year. All my (girl) friends demand my "congratulations" back. I'm a man.
