What Food From Your Home Country Did The Argentinians Ruin?

I can't stand overcooked pasta. It's an insult. Considering you're italian, it must be much worse. They butcher every Italian word too. Wait until you want to get some lasagna.

I've seen desecrated wraps, pies, and the worst... hamburgers with ham, eggs and mayo. OMG. Eating fries with a fork. Covering a brownie in dulce de leche. Coming up with some concoction like empanada or pizza and calling it Americana.

Arg Italian is the same as Tex Mex, just ask any Mexican what they think about it. I basically see it as cheddar cheese goop porn lol

This may be true in Oklahoma City or Boise, but in LA, SF, or NY, you can find amazing, very authentic food from all over the world. One difference is that in these places, unlike Buenos Aires, there are many immigrants from all over the world. Thus, some Japanese restaurants attract Japanese customers. Same for Moroccan, Thai, Vietnamese, and of course, Mexican. (I just spend a week in San Francisco eating at my favorite restaurants!) That said, you can still have PF Changs and Taco Bell in NY, but unlike in Argentina, there are options.

Agree that "Tex-Mex" does not equal "Mexican food". It is a departure into a new style of food with different recipes. But actually it is a region of Mexico (Chihuahua) and the state of Texas (basically, either side of the Rio Grande) that created a new style.

But "Argentine Italian" isn't a unique food. It is a horrible attempt at copying the original recipes of Italy. Except for a handful of locations, it's just an utter and complete failure.

So although the joke is appreciated, it's not accurate.

I would say "Pizza", but we have another thread for that.

Close but. Not quite true. Tex Mex can be well executed and healthy and taste good. Although it is not genuine it can be done well. Argentine / Italian is born bad. Served bad and has no place on my table. [and...... I truly love Italian cuisine]

I understand preferences, I have mine as well, but comparing local Italian, Italian American and Italian is like comparing apples, oranges and bananas...comparing a " cuisine " vs another one is just too broad, it might be easier doing a side by side dish ( ok not with pizza again ) but say Arg chop suey vs American chop suey, local spaghetti carbonara vs American equivalent and so on. :)

Immigrants cook / open places for their folk, usually off mainstream circuits but they do exist here. The number is more limited though. Argentine in general are not very adventurous with their meals and it takes time for foreign cuisines to assimilate here. 20 years ago sushi was from outer space, look at the dozens of sushi delivery places you can find nowadays. You have to think of Buenos Aires as being 20 years behind other big cities in regards of food / dining. The US attracts immigrants from all over the world, in the last decade Argentina has been a destination for a lot of immigrants from bordering countries, and they have influenced local cuisine and have opened many places, look at Peruvian restaurants, Korean, Bolivian, etc. We do not get immigrants from Thailand, or Eastern Europe as massively as the US does, hence the lack of places serving such food.

Let me be a defender of Argentine cuisine; I LOVE IT!
I agree there is not the same diversity that one can find in NYC, London or even Prague(where I also live)
I think that many places cater in the several past years to foreigners , be they tourists or expats, and often have high prices for medoicre dishes where as mnay local places have delicious food where "in the know" foreigners and locals frequent. Many people complain"the Mexican food sucks here or Asian food isn;t like it should be" I can tell you that quite often Mexican, Asian and other foods taste quite different in N America, UK, etc than they do in their home countries! Try living for a while in Caracas, middle America or Managua where "international'' food is an American chain like McDonalds, Taco Bell or KFC! Even in a sohisticated city like Prague today, often pizza is made with ketchup and not tomato sauce and the spice par excellence is salt! Cabbage is often seen as the side dish even with pasta!
One must learn to enjoy the foods one likes here or anywhere as they abound and don't bitch next time you're enjoying your cafe con leche con media lunas or a great asado! You could be really be living in one of the many food deserts of which there are many!
