ahem...was my last post on this thread erased for some reason?

I figured apartment prices was one thing you could discuss openly on an expat forum.

I'm starting to get annoyed at this. In 2008 I rented a place in Palermo with 1 br. and a nice terrace for $800 a month, in a new building with pool. Now that apt. is up to $1200 a month (50% increase in one year!) and for $750 or $800 you can only get a basic studio with no porch. These prices are ridiculous and comparable to the US...why would I pay $1200 in Buenos Aires? I know a lot of expats are just not coming anymore and many have left. Don't the owners and agencies here realize their greed is going to make the market collapse? I'm leaving Argentina. I hope the prices will come down again soon, I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on WHEN that might be.

I haven't raised my rates in 2 years, I am with one of the original Apartment rental agencies and I think they have stayed good value (cheaper) which is why I have good occupancy rates: www.stayba.com

Don't get nasty.

The point is first, a question if people think apt. prices will fall back to a more reasonable level. They're inflated right now. If you're paying $1300/month for rent in BUENOS AIRES you're nuts.

That's the second point. I'm willing to pay more for better value elsewhere...like Brazil, which is a more interesting country in the end. Price is a major attraction for Buenos Aires. Either that, or I'd go some place like Thailand or Vietnam and live for 1/4 the price without the pretensions.

What an insulting post to all Argentinians and especially my fellow portenos . How dare you place a value on us that is demeaning as well as written from a position of authority as you are a USA citizen.

USA is the main reason for the economic crash destroying world economies . Trillions of dollars have been paid to banks and none has been paid to the little people but still you complain about the rent you pay in Buenos Aires.

Argentina does not want people like you and frankly as a guest here you are showing absolutely no respect to the people nor the culture. For your information in our history we have been the worlds most expensive city more than 4 times since 1900 and over time it will happen again so leave now before its too late......

Fact is BA's glory days are well behind it, and until you realize that and get off your pretentious high horse your country will continue to decline economically and otherwise. The reason prices are high now (for temporary rentals of all things) has nothing to do with why they may have been high before, but with the blind greed of owners and agencies, who are driving people away. I'm sure you're aware that lots of new buildings have been erected, which are now empty and will remain so. When the next mega-crash inevitably comes very soon, you will be singing a different tune.

What difference would it have made if some of the money was given to "little people"...such as the survivors of the earthquake in Hatti (actually, it was and continues to go there).

I'm well aware the US is not worth it which is why I don't like to live there. But its declining value is not for the reasons you may think.

"Paying money to the little people," i.e. taking from the productive and giving to the non-productive and funding lavish 1-month paid vacations for all is one of the chief reasons Argentina is going down the toilethole.

Are you here in BA?

If so, why?

For all its economic woes, i think its a bit strange to imply that argentina is going down the toilet hole, because long term expats can't find cheap rents in one the most desireable locations in the country, and because the government lets workers take holiday (its 2 weeks btw, not a month. I'd kill for a month)

As you stated before, you like to move to different places all the time, I guess then you will have to start looking for a new cheaper destination. However if you had done your homework before coming here, you would know ( and would not complain therefore ) that this is a very unstable country in economic terms, and that should not surprise you. When I mean unstable, I am not just talking about devaluation or inflation, but also about prices in dollars climbing, that is what you are experiencing with your rent. This shouldn´t have taken you by surprise really. If you think it is expensive now, you should read and see what prices were like in the 90´s with a 1 peso 1 dollar exchange rate. On a side note you have learned the national sport very well: complaining that is! Congrats ;)
