The currency controls aren't arbitrary. They are in place so the central bank has dollar reserves to pay for energy imports and make debt obligations that are due in dollars. If there weren't any controls it would be a free for all and the central bank would have no dollar reserves.

In this case the currency controls are the equivalent of giving a cancer patient a tylenol when the patient needs chemo-therapy. Maybe they'll alleviate the pain temporarily and buy some time, but more serious problems are ahead unless some significant structural changes are put into place.
Currency controls are always arbitrary.

Let private companies buy the overseas oil and charge the market price. There is absolutely no need or reason for the government to be involved with imports and exports or deciding what goods or services are to be subsidized. Why? Because invariably they do a lousy job at it and a lot of the money gets drained off in corruption.

Any type of forced control is arbitrary, is the definition. Is not a recommendation, is an obligation. When you enter into another country, you need to pass a security checkpoint. Is not "oh, yes, you can skip this because we are cool with you, you seem like a cool guy", no, it's a restriction.

In your analogy, the doctor is not doing anything to give you chemo-therapy. They are saying that chemo-therapy is not important, that alternative medicines won't work either but.. he is not doing anything! The cancer is still spreading and him, the patient, is unable to do anything to fix it on his own. As the official doctor isn't giving him any sort of treatment, he is going to an underground facility run by a veterinary who is giving him illegal pills that he wants.

True, the patient can't heal his own cancer. We cannot heal the economy by buying dollars. The government won't fix anything by selling dollars to the public. But you know what? The doctor, or the government, is the one that needs to fix our health, our economy. We cannot fix the exchange rate, nor the devaluation, nor the inflation. The only thing we know, is that our doctor is in the back screwing a nurse, stealing supplies for his home, saying we are fine, doing nothing.. only telling us that our sick is temporal due to the weather.

Either you die, or you go to another doctor for another sort of treatment because this one is clearly not working.

I'm not endorsing the economic model of the current gov't.

I was just trying to say that the currency controls have limited capital flight and preserved reserves for the time being, however they are just masking a far larger problem...at best they are buying some time.

@Joe - Again I'm not defending the current gov't here, but what government isn't involved in imports and exports and subsidizing goods? Government should definitely have a role in regulating trade policy, the question is how much.

Even Adam Smith wrote that people will become stupid and ignorant in the long run if there is no gov't intervention in an economy.

Hi:

Just out of curiousity, you guys seem to know quiet a bit about economy.
In layman`s terms, what happened in 1992 was it similar or close to what is happening now? Or was it a different problem?

Well in a sense very similar in that it is a case of the government spending (and stealing) more than it takes in taxes. Then they try to keep the game going as long as possible with their standard bag of tricks including (overseas borrowing, money printing, currency controls, quantitative easing (QE) etc.) The problems you're seeing in Europe, Japan, US and here would not be occurring if governments didn't borrow and spend (squander) a lot of money. That is, if they only spent what they took in in taxes there would be a lot less drama, in fact no drama at all.

when I look at http://www.preciodolarblue.com.ar/ it shows 9.84 -- 9.88 therefore I am wondering where you find the figure 9.98 -- a few cents here and there is not important to me but I like to see the source you are using for your data. thank you walter

I'm talking about the erm, 'parallel' market. I just read it on the bus, but now i see this headline that it hit $10 today.

Please discuss your execrable ticket buying strategies on another thread where decent law abiding citizens do not have to view it with the title: "How to miserly save a few pesos by profiteering in airline flight purchases and simultaneously plundering from the locals to boot".

Joe If one pays for a ticket with a foreign credit card in dollars, the travel agency resells the dollars at $10 or more? If one sells dollars to a local individual for $5,20 then he turns around and resells for $10 . Well at least one gets peace of mind...!
