Of course Fukuyama and friends were sure of themselves. Even though the very existence of free market back up tools like the IMF and WB were proving all along that capitalism wasn’t sustainable by itself as claimed. Then 2008 happened. But that’s not even the point. Putins Russia doesn’t need to be painted as an aggressive state, it has a history of being an aggressive state. Yes war is ugly. Obviously. And any life lost because of war is a tragedy. But I m pretty sure letting Russians get away with that invasion isn’t a signal Georgians would be loving right now.
We ll also just have to agree to disagree that post soviet Russia was ever going to be part of Europe. Let alone that Europeans needed any type of transatlantic ideological driven influencing on the matter. Besides the case of Turkey proved the limits of that influence: despite Clinton’s wishful thinking, Europe never budged when it came to accepting Turkey into EU.
