Am I the only person in Argentina that finds the term "chinito" offensive?

Chinito is not the word to address or talk about someone formally. As a diminutive its patronising and belittling in most cases to gringo ears but then Argentines diminutise words frequently. ''Paseme el vasito por favor'' or ''Como esta tu abuelita? Etc. Its a form of talking. No harm is...

Am I the only person in Argentina that finds the term "chinito" offensive?

No doubt it was body shaming and contravenes Geneva human rights protocols. I'd be offended if I were you. In fact I am offended for you.

Am I the only person in Argentina that finds the term "chinito" offensive?

Why do foreigners come to live in Argentina and then complain that its not like their home country/culture.....Argentinian society is evolving just like anywhere else and one day 'chinito' for example will probably be recognised generally as un unacceptable term. In the meantime worry about more...

Am I the only person in Argentina that finds the term "chinito" offensive?

People who get triggered by words (sounds) are just looking to be offended. Argentines often call anyone from the ME a 'Turk' and anyone from the FE 'Chino'. There is usually no malice behind it at all just an understandable ignorance owing to Argentina's historic lack of multiculturalism and...

How did you get over the last threshold to fluency in Spanish?

Great points. Its worth remembering that learning spanish or any foreign language has no end just as we never stop learning new words and phrases in our native language. Languages evolve as do we personally. I'm sure I speak (in my native tongue) quite differently to how I spoke 20 years ago.

Is there market demand for fresh oyster mushrooms (hongos girgolas) in Buenos Aires?

If straight to consumer means delivered veg boxes to domestic addresses then I dont agree that supplying restaurants is necessarily better. Not in my experience. Restaurants also try once, cancel suddenly or go out of business or are super demanding and difficult to deal with.

Spurs in the Champions League Final

I think you are confusing BA with the Costa del Sol. I'm not even sure you can find a brit run bar in BA. Having said that I'm sure you can find an international sports bar that will show the CL final.

    Business closures in Buenos Aires

High street shops/main street stores all over the (western) world are closing down at a rate of knots. This is the modern world. Argentina was always going to suffer more though because of the greater inefficiency and corruption etc.

The New York Times article on Argentina

Many poor people in poorer countries don't unwilling have children. Its mostly a lazy and patronising first world myth. More than lack of contraception, or ignorance, religious or cutural influence children are a practical form of social security when the parents are sick and old. More mouths...

    Anybody read Cristina's book yet?

In a hundred years time Mirtha will be asked what the country of Argentina was like. Joke explained part one - Mirtha is still alive in a hundred years. part two (more sad than funny) - Argentina no longer exists.

An Argentinian doctor making $50k a year survives how exactly?

I know of a vascular specialist doctor in Salta that worked in a grotty public hospital and also his one room private clinic that was also part sponsored with public hospital funds. He said he was earning US$2000/$70 000 per month. That was more than a year ago. I'd be very suprised if fully...

Is Paris burning? Horrific news from France.

What constitutes vandalism? Spray painting Pierre loves Marie in small letters on a perimiter wall of church grounds? How many churches were 'vandalised' in the preceding year and historically? Evidence of a campaign to destroy Christian heritage? Mainstream Christianity is becomingly...

    Banking nightmare

The system is designed that way so small claims like are just forgotten about because clients dont feel they are worth pursuing and whatever happens they suck the interest off the money in the meantime. But in my case we are talking about alot of money and it just feels like theft. And an...

    Banking nightmare

My bank with whom I pay US$20 service charge a month to have an account with has been withholding a considerable amount of money from annulled flight and acommodation purchases made in Europe via Visa debit card months ago. You would think if it was just a straight annulment and the money is...

    Rosario shooting

San Jose has never ever had a good reputation. Ever. A disappointing capital of a beautiful country. Ive also heard that owning rural properties 'in paradise' can be problematic with ursurpers and robbers targeting gringos. However the country on the whole is pretty safe as I gather especially...
