I haven't been able to get a good night's rest anywhere here

Haha I loved this thread. I thought I was the only one about to go crazy with the bird singing twice a day! We used to live for our first 1.5 years on a semipiso in Palermo, close to Scalabrini Ortiz avenue. It was HEAVEN compared to our new (6 months living in) apartment in Belgrano. This...

    Dollar controls getting stricter

Hi guys. So I was out travelling outside (escaping from) Buenos Aires. You gotta love the South of Argentina. Don't you? About my comment about Lucas, well I did feel attacked on almost all of his comments and I still don't understand the "let me show the foreigners how it works" attitude but I...

    Dollar controls getting stricter

This comment is probably not needed and can be deleted but I just don't understand what the hell is an argentine doing in an expats forum and worst yet, taking the contrary against everyone. It seems Lucas has serious xenophobia issues that he should address before speaking his mind out in a...

    Anyone make their own yogurt??

You can go to a "Dietetica" (a naturist shop) and ask for a powder they call "Yogurt en Polvo", it's basically dried cultures. A pack that costs 30 pesos can last a year.

    Argentine Movie Recommendations

Made in Argentina (1987). Talks about a family that runs to the States during the military dictatorship and come back after a lot of time. Very well produced and very interesting from an expats point of view.

    Caffeine Overload?

While they seem to love coffee this country knows nothing about it. You are most likely to get instant coffee (an insult to anyone who ever tried the real thing). Mate on the other hand is a great substitute if you don't get altered by it (know of a few that drinking it will make them...

How not to stand out like a tourist

I lol'ed with the eating while walking thing. It took me about a year to understand they see it as a nasty habit. I used to run for college in the evenings, buy a couple of empanadas and a coke and hopped to the 160. I would quickly get a seat and lots of personal space (very rare over here!)...

Safety tip to keep in mind!

The problem is not being robbed outside in the streets but get kidnapped and driven inside your apartment where they will hold you up and empty it.

    Strange secret code???

I would assume they are marking your place and I'd confuse them by moving the hanger to the next building. (joke).

    Expat Pets in Buenos Aires

Amusing. I thought I was imagining things but my dog just hates it here. I am most inclined to think she just doesn't dig too many people walking too fast when she's trying to take a leak. I am also interested in knowing if someone got their pet back home and how it went.

    Recycling/green movement

Really? The encargado of my building takes out several sacks of garbage *daily*, most of it ends up in the corner of the street, piling up. This IS an issue here. On a brighter side, I have been sorting my waste as I would back home and dropping it in the containers set up in the plaza near...

    LCD tv's

I would advise you to look for a local brand. I bought mine for 2999 pesos. It's branded Rubber Ducky but it's done its job for a year now. No issues found. It's a 42 inch screen made in Tierra del Fuego. LCD para todos!

Safety tip to keep in mind!

Awful. If I might add another one: watch out when you walk your dog! My norwegian friend got fucked over a few weeks ago. Apparently it ain't new around Recoleta/Palermo. This is how it works: You walk your dog and go happy with the surroundings, and relaxing so your buddy can make his...

    Apartments in BA

I am sorry to hear your bad experience David. Yet, from what I understand you can't ask for a local warrant if making a contract as temporario. This is why this contract model exists in the first place. I might be wrong but from what I understood from my lawyer: - Temporarios are a 6 months...

    Expats not happy, why stay?

I am grateful I found a place to vent. It seems that as a foreigner you do not have the right to complain without getting a reply in the lines of the subject of this post. "If you do not like, leave" Sorry, but that is called xenophobia. As a resident, who pays and lives here on a daily...
