I would look at opening a coffee place rather than joiing a company and changing the culture, depending on your costs. You also might consider your timescales and how much spanish you can learn in advance. There are significant elections in 2015, until then the economy will get worse. After that, all options are available including recovery & growth and on the other end of the scale we might be looking at a devastating crisis without the insulating factors of the EU, the IMF or the Fed Reserve bailout. Not good!

I would take your $40k and invest it in opening a business here with your background. However, there are large risks involved in your move. Education is free here IF you have permanent residency and a DNI. I'm not sure how you would achieve permanent residency right now -- as I say, for the free education you need to be beyond the temporary renewal period. The fastest way to residency would be for your wife to have a baby here... however you'd need some income coming in in the meantime, and it can be very hard to find jobs.

BA certainly could do with some good coffee! I would have thought a business like that would be well frequented by expats, I'd be there in a shot (pun not intended). I have no first hand experience in setting up a business or buying property but I have heard that it is rather hard to do and takes time. That said, other expats have done it so it must not be impossible. As for cost of living, well I think Argentina is cheap provided you have US dollars. Cost of living here is around half to one third of what it is in Australia. Short-term rentals are relatively easy to come by if you wanted to come down and check the place out for a few months to get a feel for it. Good luck with your future plans, it all sounds very exciting!

Just for fun I went on the La Nacion website / real estate section. And to my surprise yes there are apts for sale for less than 40.000 U$D.
Most of the are small / studio types but some have balconies. So Good luck.

If you're planning to have kids, there's no point buying anything under 40m2. And if you want to rent out to tourists at a high occupancy rate, you should look at areas like Recoleta, Barrio Norte, Palermo, San Telmo, or the blurred boundaries of these areas if they're too expensive.

Find a way to bring coffee from Costa Rica here. It's the best! When I went last year I spent my entire vacation consuming the coffee non-stop. Seriously, it was so good I would have four cups for breakfast and here I only drink one cup per day.

40k won't buy you too much I'm afraid. Have you looked at argenprop.com.ar recently? Its hard enough to find a good plot to build on at that price.

Why Argentina? It is expensive right now.

I found a website with some condo's priced at under $40k. From everyone's reaction it appears that $40 is a pipe dream. What is a reasonable amount for a small condo in a safe area?

Argentina offers free health care and college, two very large expenses in America. I would be able to have children and they would be able to obtain a college degree, that is not something I can foresee myself being able to afford in America.

I would suggest renting somewhere for a few months while you check out the lay of the land.
You make it all sound so easy, but what you really need is some hands-on facts and experience.

I totally agree. I just wanted to make sure this is all possible before I put down a months paycheck on plane tickets.

Interested as to where you read the $40k figure. A modest condo in a rentable to tourists neighbourhood would cost $80 - $140 K.
