Hi - I’ll be renting an AirBNB in Buenos Aires. The host wrote:

I’ll be using my Argentina DNI. I’m hesitant to share a copy. But not worth worrying about?

Thanks for any comments.

Personally, I refuse these kinds of requests. Airbnb has already verified your identity. The host will always say this is a building requirement, but they are making that up. This kind of host will also hassle you about guests or visitors, you might want to ask about that.

I have stayed at over 20 Airbnbs in my lifetime. I agree with Lavish 100%. Spot on observation.

I think this stems from Airbnb units not being welcome in certain buildings around town (mine is one of these). A guy who ran an Airbnb out of his unit here was just shut down and forced to rent longterm (new bylaws enacted by the consorcio banning temporary rental units altogether) after several rowdy guests and an incident where he left a set of keys in an outside lockbox that were quickly jailbroken (leaving some thief with the building/unit keys and the rest of us having to pitch in to pay to change the front door lock via increased expenses).

A lot of rental companies are trying their luck operating Airbnb units in largely long-term residential buildings and it's not really that safe for folks living there full-time to have strangers coming in/out like it's a hostel. So, I feel asking for ID is just another way to safeguard existing tenants to ensure safety and accountability. A lot of buildings have requirements outside of Airbnb because they aren't meant to run as hotels/hostels. When you sign a more typical lease you have to provide ID, so I don't really think it's outside norms. You have to provide DNI for almost anything you do here in the city. Airbnb verifies identity, but many buildings want additional verification as they aren't necessarily privy to their units being used this way and it may be a workaround for those wanting to use their apartments on the platform without a hassle from neighbors or building management.

The building in which I have lived for 24 years has become a hotel for illegals who refuse to show their IDs. One unit had a revolving door of people who refused to provide their identities. Another unit's heir passed on and no one has taken charge of it while three men live free of charge. The debt to the consorcio is more than four million pesos. Safety is a major concern for these reasons.

Providing your DNI down here is practically universal. I would say that's a common way for them to safeguard against any damages. I wouldn't worry about it. My only tip for you is I've been told is to block out the "Tramite No" at the front bottom of your card when sharing copies, as it can be used to fraudulently request bank loans.

Great tip. Thanks.

If they're usurping property can't you call in the police to throw them out?

I have a flat in Airbnb and I also ask for a dni or passport Im going to rent out my flat and I would like to know who that person is I don't see any problem morover if something happens to that person and I have to call the police or embassy I don't have any document to show....so I think it is important to have a document. When I go with my family to Uruguay they ask me for dni and no problem at all for me. I don't see why it bothers that much.
