Airliner Shot Down?

Claimed audio of separatists confirming they shot down a passenger plane and realizing how fucked they are.

Anyone speak Russian?

In Eastern Europe many military transport aircraft and civilian aircraft are essentially the same. It is hard to mistake a B777 for anything but a civilian aircraft. They are distinctive even with the naked eye at 35.000 feet.

Again, we don't have any confirmation that a missile brought down the aircraft. From the photos and videos that are being posted it is obvious that the aircraft broke up in mid-air.

But how easy is it to tell on a wee yellow screen?

It is at least strange and curious that they were shot down by the russians. They were winning, the russian diplomats won the Crimea issue and they were winning in Ukraine. :(

Each airplane model has an specific radar signature and in this is case we're talking about an airliner flying in straight line at cruise altitude which also carries a transponder with an ID code, so a radar operator from either ATC or antiaircraft unit or even a dude with binoculars should know what's being tracked. Hope that someone hunts them down and make them pay for these poor souls

Ukrainian AN-26 have the bottom part painted in gray, just like the Malaysian plane (could be an explanation?).

You would be able to tell them apart just by looking. The profile is completely different. One has High-bypass turbofans, the other has props. There are about 1000 things one could use to tell aircraft apart. With a bit of practice we can differentiate between aircraft just by the sound of their engines. Anyone that knows anything about aircraft can tell a 757, 767, and 777 apart by their silhouette from the ground.

Commercial aircraft have a radio called a transponder. This continuously broadcasts a discrete 4-digit code entered by the pilots which was given to them by air traffic control. Moreover, this aircraft would have been flying a known civilian route, or corridor.

The military has a system known as IFF. It lets us tell who is friendly and who is hostile on the battlefield. We need to determine if the blip on the scope is a bad guy waaaaaaaaaaaay before we can actually see him/her.

I can't imagine either side intentionally shooting down a civilian aircraft. The political cost will be enormous.

I read comments here and it's great (pilots, etc.)

CNN reporting US officials say plane was shot down: DOD(CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 4:33 p.m. ET]The United States has concluded the Malaysian airline was shot down, a senior U.S. official told CNN's Barbara Starr. One radar system saw a surface-to-air missile system turn on and track an aircraft right before the plane went down Thursday, according to the official. A second system saw a heat signature at the time the airliner was hit, the official said. The United States is analyzing the trajectory of the missile to try to learn where the attack came from.

Like so much in tragedies in life, the guilty will go scott-free
Let's just hope it was so fast for those on board but htose behind now are the ones suffering!

Some sources say the plane was mistaken for Putin's plane, which was coming back from Brazil. Both planes would actually have crossed near Warsaw. Both planes are white with a red and blue horizontal stripe.
