the old city part of montevideo is possible in a long day trip via buquebus there are hostals and recently i stayed at the nh montevideo for 75 us$ a night and had really good rack of lamb at the hotel for 12 us$ its better as a two day or three day trip as its 3 hours one way. its also a city on the beach for a combo architecture/beach experience.
