Asuncion Paraguay, What Is It Like?

A few years ago I went to Asuncion at the invitation of local friends. The family has owned a cattle ranch in the Chaco plains for 3 generations. I had a wonderful time but I certainly wouldn't live anywhere in Paraguay. Climate can be described as hot and humid for most of the year. Generally the very short dry season is between June and September. The wet season covers the remainder of the year.

La Chacarita in Asuncion is one of those places like La Boca or La Perla in San Juan, Puerto Rico where gringos are warned not to enter.

I was reading Antoine de Saint-Exupery Wind, Sand and Stars yesterday. In it he describes Asuncion:

"....the ironic grass that showed the tip of its nose between the pavements of the capital, that slipped in on behalf of the invisible but ever-present virgin forest to see if man still held the town, if the hour had not come to send all these stones tumbling."
