I do a lot of professional photography, and I was really looking forward to bringing my camera equipment with me, but after hearing stories like this it's making me really think twice. I might just end up buying a decent compact and having to be satisfied with that..

Buy a compact and enjoy your trip - standing guard to protect your possessions is no fun.

A friend of mine is a native and a professional photographer here and had all of her gear ripped off at the train station. happens to everyone.

If it really happened to everyone, tourism in Argentina would drop by 90% or more in a matter of days.

Not everyone is drunk in the streets and gets "harassed" by the police at three in the morning, either.

(As Arty previously posted.)

what i meant was that it happens to locals and tourists. you just need to be aware of whats going on around you. i've had other friends who are locals who have been ripped off at the bus and train stations.

still wanna harp on me about the dust up with the coppers?

how about i don't share my experiences with others? at least I add something to this place instead of being a prick like some people like to do.

maybe I'll just post about how i sit around all day and drink alone at my house... oh wait, I don't.

Buy good, specialist insurance and then you won't cry too much when you get robbed. My girlfriend uses Glover and Howe (Need to be UK resident http://www.gloverhowe.com/). It's not cheap (c. 5% of value for global cover), but worth it to give you the confidence to walk around.
Also make sure to have several memory cards so you don't lose all your pictures from one card when your kit is robbed.
