A note published in the Brazilian press today says that the Chinese are really pushing for the sale of the J-10B fighter to Argentina, instead of the cheaper FC-17.

The J-10 is a much bigger and more capable aircraft than the FC-17. It is also significantly more expensive to maintain and operate. Despite China's best efforts, the J-10 has not found a single export buyer as of yet. This might be why they are pushing this plane, instead of the FC-17, to Argentina. Since they are the one's lending the money, they are the ones who can dictate what Argentina will buy with that money. So it seems that the J-10 will be the one.


About the J-10:

The J-10 is a copy of the Israeli Lavi fighter. Back in the 1980s, leveraging extensive US know-how, Israel started developing the Lavi. Due to escalating cost and political pressure, the Lavi project was canceled when it was almost complete. Israel then clandestiny and without US approval, sold the plans of the Lavi to China. Plans which included sensitive US technology. China finished the project with Israeli help and that became the J-10 fighter.

Further...Argentina can't maintain and arm what they have. What are they going to do with something that uses unconventional lubricants and oddball engines?

In December 2011, Japan picked Lockheed Martin’s new F-35A stealth fighter as its next fighter aircraft, to replace its aging F-4 “Kai” Phantom fleet. The F-35 was actually their 2nd choice.
Back in February 2006, Inside The Air Force (ITAF) reported that momentum was building within the USAF to sell the ultra-advanced F-22A Raptor abroad to trusted US allies, as a way of increasing numbers and production. Japan clearly wanted them, and the Raptor was a topic of diplomatic discussions in several venues, including a 2007 summit meeting. In the end, however, US politics denied export permission for downgraded export variants of the F-22, and its production line was terminated. That left Japan looking at other foreign “F-X” fighter options in the short term, while they considered a domestic stealth fighter design as their long-term project.
In the ensuing F-X competition, the F-35 Lightning II beat BAE’s Eurofighter Typhoon, as well as an upgraded F/A-18E Super Hornet from Boeing. Now Lockheed Martin has to deliver, and so will its Japanese partners. Will the F-35A’s price and program delays create problems in Japan? I honestly doubt that Cristina is buying these planes because she wants to. China is probably putting the acquisition as a condition for the loan. They really want an export client for this plane, and Argentina as a first client could make other buyers more open to acquiring the J-10.

I concur with Camberiu. PRC wants a sales point right here in SA..Will be using the Argies as their sales agent for its vast arsenal of stolen tech merchandises in order to start "war machine selling game"... America and the EU watch out, the commies are to overtake all of you by 2035..

Argentina needs to look at her true trading partners ie Brazil for combat planes. Anyway, why the hell does Argentina need war planes? Buying jet fuel from Iran to support Chinese planes armed with French missiles..............what a plan.

China is really putting a lot of pressure for the sale of the J-10. On the official (government owned) China Military Online website, they just published an article titled "J-10 more suitable for Argentina", where the author a Chinese fighter pilot, argues that only the J-10 can give Argentina any hope of challenging the British Typhoon fighters currently stationed in the Falkland islands. I also found particularly interesting the emotional argument used by the author to urge Argentina to complete the acquisition:

"Facing the Britain, a traditional powerful nation, as well as the surrounding countries such as Chile and Brazil which have introduced fourth-generation warplanes, Argentina would feel ashamed for the old stuffs it is using,"

Yes, because that is the criteria governments should use when doing acquisitions in the order of hundreds of millions of dollars: shame.
One interesting piece of info I was not aware of is that China manufacture 36 J-10 fighters for Pakistan, who backed out of the purchase at the last moment and left China holding an extra 36 J-10 fighters it has no use for. Those are probably the fighters China is currently trying to push into Argentina. Let's see how the soap opera is going to play out.

Clarin confirmed yesterday that Argentine pilots are in China right now testing the J-10 fighter jet.
