Cheapest way to get cash

Unless things have changed with Xoom in the past two years (do they still work with Latin Express & Banco Frances ?), you can cash in USD only at Banco Frances and a DNI will be required (passport = no).
Oops, my wife picked up the US$ cash at a Banco Francés using her DNI (we both have DNIs). We did this transfer with Xoom in early August 2011. I believe they also accept passports now as ID according to the instructions on their web site.

i opened a bank account two weeks ago just with my foreign passport. who says you can't bank locally?

I want to set up a Charles Schwab checking account, but how difficult is it to get the card sent here? Is it even possible? I have an apartment, but the only thing I've ever gotten sent here was a postcard from Spain and it took a month.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I get mail here all the time from the states. Snail mail is usually a week to a week and a half. FedEx can be 3 days.

Western union is now trying to charge $25 for a transaction. Their exchage rate is still good though 4.19 instead of 4.20 which is the rate online. So, what´s your opinions on wiring money to my boyfriends account?

Or another quick, easy way to get cash?

Who says you can't bank locally...pretty much everyone except you!

Please do tell...what bank allowed this?

It's been a few years... But I opened an account at Banco de la Nacion in 2007, only had a CDI at the time, but I'm not sure that was even required – I think I just needed my passport. Thought I'd use it, ended up just letting it die due to the 15 peso/month (something like that) monthly fee. I do remember that at the time it seemed like they were one of the only banks that would let me do this, but I remember that Citibank did as well. Have the laws changed since?

Give them a call and ask. I opened my Schwab account about a week before leaving for Argentina, and wasn't sure my card would arrive in time -- they mentioned being able to overnight the card to either my U.S. address or my Argentine one, as long as I sent a written request. As a heads up, I initially received conflicting information about using the card abroad -- the first guy said the bank would block overseas activity on a card less than a few months old, while the second guy said that was hooey (as it turns out, I was able to start using my 2-day-old card in Argentina without problem.)
