COVID-19 vaccine development pipeline gears up

So according to Putin the Russian vaccine is not good for people over 60... yet isn't this the exact risk group we spent the better part of a year under strict quarantine to protect in the first place? Isn't this the exact group that Gines and Alberto promised to take care of first? And Pfizer...?
Ouch. Why any trust would be put in a diabolical character like Putin is beyond me.

And this vaccine is not expected to complete the trial until May???
....The interim analysis of the phase 3 trial was the last one before the trial is completed in May, when the vaccine developer would conduct a final analysis to determine the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, a company spokesperson said....

"We know that it makes noise, but it does not affect us in our vaccination plan because the first batch that arrives will be destined for health workers and security personnel. By the end of the year it will also be recommended for those over 60 and we will be able to advance with those groups, "a senior official from the Casa Rosada told LA NACION....

"There is an absolute distortion in the translation. Putin said that he is 67 years old and that the vaccine has not been applied because for now the protocols are up to 60 years old. In Russia they are investigating people under 18 and over 60. December 30 would end the study in those over 60. What is done is to comply with the protocol, "argued the Axel Kicillof official in dialogue with Radio 10....

What a bunch of incompetent fools!!

So if at the end of the trial, Russia recommends that it's too risky for people over 60, Argentina is going to be left with vaccines for just people under 60? The same demographic that rarely dies from the virus.

Shaking my head...this crew makes the Trump admin look like very stable geniuses which isn't easy to do.

Now the Arg government is blaming someone from the Kremlin delegation, it's never their own fault of course.

Come on, relax... this is a new virus, the vaccines are even newer, problems were not unexpected and we're damn lucky to have them already. Even if over-60s can't be vaccinated (and my understanding is that the Sputnik trials for over 60s and under 18s are simply not finished yet), if community transmission in under 60s is stopped, then everyone else will be protected pretty well.

I was initially a bit dismissive of the Sputnik vaccine, believing it to be a copy of the Oxford one, but it seems to be an original development using a different virus vector, and the fact that the fact that the Oxford team are looking at a combined vaccine speaks volumes about the seriousness of the development.

Oh, and the Biontech vaccine isn't recommended for people with severe allergies, why aren't you all screaming about that?

I will say that Argentina needs to get its shit together and negotiate a deal with Pfizer / Biontech, what I'm reading about that negotiation is just stoopid.

So, relax, be careful, and remember you have to make it through to March at least to get a vaccine and play in the roaring 20s as The Economist has it ;-)

It is not about relaxing expectations about any vaccine, all are as valid as the next one until proven otherwise, it is however about the Argentine government getting its shit together as you correctly state.

There are a multitude of vaccines out there and this government went and put all its money on just one of them, after justifying that by promising things they knew were untrue (or just as bad, simply failed to read things that were there all along) just to make some quick political propaganda out of it. There was no need for them to say or do what they did.

As a result they have harmed the credibility of whatever vaccine they push on the population and risk poor compliance with it as people question "what other lies they are being told" ... a vaccine that nobody wants to take is just as good as no vaccine.

....According to microbiologist Alexander Gintsburg of the federal research center for Epidemiology and Microbiology in Gamaleya, people over the age of 60 will develop antibodies after receiving the Sputnik V vaccine but they may be less effective than those produced by younger people...."The only thing is to what extent the antibodies will neutralize the virus: Younger people develop antibodies that interact very well with the virus, while the elderly develop antibodies that interact with the virus much less, dozens or even hundreds of times less," the microbiologist explained....

I am glad you brought up this issue...

....“A very small population of individuals will have allergic reactions to the vaccine,” says Todd Brown, a registered pharmacist and clinical instructor in the department of pharmacy and health systems sciences at Northeastern. “These people should be able to anticipate this response because they will have most likely had allergic reactions to other vaccines too. “Unless you’ve had an allergic response to vaccines in the past, you shouldn’t be worried about this with the COVID-19 vaccine,” he continues. “We know from the trials that this doesn’t happen in the general population.” The vaccine trials are designed to represent the majority of the population; people who have allergic reactions are outliers....
