Covid Vaccination Argentina

Any guesses for which legislators exactly were blocking it... meanwhile their friends who own the labs making the Argentine components of the currently available vaccines or serving as intermediarios probably won't be happy to hear there may be competition on their turf for which no one is getting a cut of the action...

Does anyone have an update on if Janssen and Moderna actually been approved by ANMAT yet?
....The Frente de Todos bloc on Thursday rejected a request from the opposition to discuss a change in the text of the vaccine law in order to remove the exception to indemnity "in cases of negligence", one of the legal obstacles faced by the Government in negotiation with Pfizer....

NO...so far only Pfizer received the emergency approval on 22 December 2020.

....The first objective of the Government is to unblock the arrival to the country of the vaccines donated by the US government. Last month, the Joe Biden administration announced that it would donate millions of Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen vaccines to several countries around the world, including Argentina, but warned that each country should be responsible for adapting its legal frameworks so that the donation is made possible.

....In the case of Moderna and Janssen, who had very preliminary dialogues with the government, they have not yet received authorization from ANMAT. The first did not start the process and the second did start the necessary process so that the vaccine can be administered in the country....

Covid-19: the City summons volunteers for a vaccine combination study to those who have a dose of Sputnik V. So said the CABA Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós; is for people over 21 years of age who have received the first dose of Sputnik V more than 30 days ago....

Did anyone hear the press conference given this morning by Dr. Quiros re: the vaccine combination study?
I did not. In reading the electronic news sources I found a discrepancy in the data published by La Nacion, InfoBae and Diario Perfil as opposed to that of Diario Clarin. All three reported...."those who want to receive one of two vaccines, AstraZeneca or Sinopharm"....

Whereas....Updated on 2 July 2021 at 9:41am
....During a press conference, the CABA official pointed out that those selected will receive as a second dose one of three vaccines: Sputnik V component 2, Sinopharm or AstraZeneca....

It is entirely voluntary. Those interested in participating who received the first dose of Sputnik V can now sign up online may be offered a different vaccine than the first (e.g. AZ or Sinopharm) I assume for control purposes for the trial, some will also be offered component 2 of Sputnik in order to assess any differences within this pool of people.

Those who choose not to participate will naturally be able to wait until the same vaccine as their first is available for the second dose. Also, understood that trials will be happening in other provinces like San Luis and Buenos Aires too.

Some more promising news for those in the city - between today and tomorrow, 50% of the population will have had at least 1 dose of vaccine and 14% both doses.

To put it into perspective, according to the La Nacion vaccine dashboard (whose data is similar to the national dashboard) as of this morning:
  • The top three performing provinces in terms of % of the population with 1 dose are: CABA (46,5%+), La Pampa (46,6%) and San Luis (44,9%). The bottom 3 performing provinces are Missiones (29,1%), Corrientes (33,6%) and Entre Rios (35,2%). National average is around 38% - PBA is at 36%.

  • The top three performing provinces in terms of % of the population with 2 doses are: La Pampa (13,6%), CABA (13%) and San Luis (12,8%). The bottom 3 performing provinces are Missiones (7,5%), PBA (7,9%) and Formosa (7,9%). National average is around 9,3%.

  • The top three performing provinces in terms of efficiency in vaccinating people (% of vaccines received that have been administered to people) are: La Pampa (100%), San Luis (100%) and CABA (94%). The bottom 3 performing provinces are Missiones (68%), Corrientes (80%) and PBA (81%). National average is around 83,8%.
In more worrying news, more cases of Delta have been detected amongst arriving travelers from US and Venezuela:

Strange how when the vaccines are free they can suddenly find a way around the legal issues?
Could it be that Pfizer and the rest were just too expensive? Given the state of the governments finances they could probably ill afford further foreign debts.

Unlikely. This has been covered before along with the budget for COVID response. Key point to note is the government has already purchased many vaccines slightly more expensive than Pfizer etc and vaccines make a small part of the COVID response budget. The government is also paying in cash for vaccines and reported no payment issues or delays to date.
Also remember that until this decree, Argentina would have been unable to receive Pfizer vaccines for free as a donation (and pending ANMAT still unable to receive Moderna and Janssen)

The backroom and details of the decree to unlock the purchase of Pfizer, Janssen and Moderna vaccines. To overcome the legal pitfalls with the US laboratories, the term “negligence” was eliminated; The announcement was made by Vilma Ibarra and Carla Vizzotti, the two officials who were in the negotiations with the North American companies....

Copy of the Official Decree (DNU), effective 2 July 2021, is included in the article.
