The Ministry of Health warns that the circulation of the Delta variant is already 30-40% at the national level.
The numbers provided by the National portfolio show that community transmission of this variant of the coronavirus in Argentina is close. They even pointed out that it is above 50% in some agglomerates, as explained to Infobae by Analía Rearte, National Director of Epidemiology. In Neuquén, community transmission has already been confirmed. The opinion of infectologists...

Coronavirus: Marta Cohen spoke about the request to Boris Johnson to avoid "disastrous consequences" in the UK...The physician, a pathologist and pediatrician from La Plata who lives in the UK, referred today to the epidemiological situation in that country, which has been registering more than 40,000 cases of coronavirus per day and has already warned about the arrival of a new wave. "President Boris Johnson is being asked to reinstate the mandatory use of masks and social distancing and that everyone should go back to work from home, if they can", revealed the specialist in an interview with C5N. Cases of coronavirus have risen sharply in recent weeks in Great Britain, now also driven by the spread of Delta Plus, a subvariant of Delta.

In relation to this situation, Cohen explained that although the new variant is 10% more contagious, so far only 6% have been reported to be circulating. She also highlighted the vaccination campaign in the UK and described it as "fantastic". She added: "Here we have 79% of people over 12 years of age with two doses, 4 million who have been given the third vaccine and 86% with some dose". However, the pediatrician warned that beyond having a large part of the population vaccinated, the increase in cases is largely due to the suspension of measures against the coronavirus that occurred in the UK at the end of July.

"Since Freedom Day, people no longer wear their masks, there is no more social distancing and people have gone back to work in their offices," Cohen explained. "What this shows is that it is not only necessary to have two doses of the vaccine and after six months the third one, but also to continue using the mask and keeping a social distance", the specialist indicated. "These are the measures that health professionals and groups such as the British Medical Association, which would be the physicians' union, to which I also belong, are asking President Boris Johnson to take. That is to say, to reinstate the mandatory use of the mask and social distancing and for everyone to return to work from home," added Cohen. However, she predicted: "There is no indication in sight that this is going to be a measure that is going to be taken and the consequences are going to be disastrous".

100% of COVID-19 cases in Uruguay are caused by the Delta variant....Three months after the first cases of the Delta variant were detected in Uruguay, it is now the dominant strain in 100% of the cases of COVID-19. In total, 900 patients with the variant of Indian origin were detected in the country, according to the latest report prepared by the Grupo de Trabajo Interinstitucional de Vigilancia Genómica de SARS-CoV-2 to which El País had access. The behavior of the virus variants in Uruguay during 2021 is mainly explained by a transition from p.1 to Delta...Will a wave come? During the whole of last year no variant of concern (VOC) circulated in Uruguay. Among the "not of concern" is p.6, known as the Uruguayan variant, which was discovered by scientists at the Institut Pasteur months ago. This originated in November and was replaced by p.1, which crossed the dry border with Brazil in February. In the case of Delta, it arrived "by airport" during the vacations in July, according to the Pasteur scientists....

The Gov't. secures 500,000 new doses....by Pablo S. Fernandez
The gov't will define next week the vaccination system for foreigners arriving in Uruguay as from November 1st, when the borders are opened. For that purpose, the authorities of the Executive Branch are working on guaranteeing new doses from the Pfizer laboratory. The gov't has already agreed on the arrival of a total of 500,000 new doses before the end of the year. The last batch will be arriving on December 23.
Some 38,600 doses will arrive each week. At the same time, next week there will be more contacts with laboratories for new purchases. The aim is to guarantee a sufficient stock to vaccinate those foreigners who wish to be vaccinated (with a third dose) and also to have the necessary doses for those who have not yet received the third inoculation. In addition, there is a minority group that has not yet received a single dose.

"As from November 1st, it is open to tourists from all over the world who can come with any type of vaccination. All vaccines are accepted", said to the press the Undersecretary of Tourism, Remo Monzeglio, after a meeting in the Executive Tower with the Secretary of the Presidency Álvaro Delgado, the Minister of Public Health Daniel Salinas, the Minister of Defense Javier García, and the Minister of the Interior Luis Alberto Heber.
Also, he said that they are "considering the possibility of vaccinating minors between 12 and 18 years of age," as announced by the gov't weeks ago. "There is a great deal of interest" in inoculating this group "to bring them up to the level of our adolescents who have already been vaccinated". In addition to having the complete vaccination cycle, tourists will have to sign an online affidavit to be able to enter the country -a procedure similar to the one that had to be done by owners, who already have their entry endorsed. Monzeglio stressed the importance of previously completing this document, which must specify the type of vaccine and the result of the PCR test within a maximum of 72 hours.

Amazing how the message has changed over the past two months. Covid was all the rage and then everything is normal. Now that delta is here you don't hear anything about it from the gov...

Just FYI, for any careful people out there who intend to keep on using masks: Atom Protect https://www.atomprotect.com/productos/ has a promotion, 15% off, for purchases on their website for 48 hours from about 6pm yesterday (so until Saturday 6pm I guess). Use the code #comunidadatom when finalizing the purchase to get the 15% discount.

The numbers are really good, though. You might think they're too good to be true, but the test positivity is 2-3% which is the lowest since this shitshow started.

If you want to worry, La Nacion's monitor shows a slight uptick over the last few days, Graciela's quote of 100% new cases being Delta in Uruguay is a bit shocking, why isn't it happening here, or maybe it is and we don't know?

Further afield, the UK is at 50k new cases per day, and one of the main drivers seems to be schoolchildren. Vaccination in the UK seems to be stalled at around 67% fully vaxed as well. With uncontrolled community transmission they're creating their own new variant, as Graciela mentions above.

Here I see the vaccination campaign for schoolkids is ongoing, which reassures me, though the CABA "education minister" managed to get a few words around the foot that's in her mouth to say that she wants schoolkids to stop using masks in class. Another Parque Patricios nutcase.

Maybe summer (we should have another long hot dry summer, the La Niña cycle is repeating this year), and school holidays will come soon enough that by sheer luck we avoid a 3rd wave?

I suggest you get your facts straight regarding this subject!

....The gov't of CABA will move forward in the relaxation of the school protocol. In the next few days, it will define that the use of masks will no longer be mandatory during recess. At this time, the details of the measure are being analyzed, which firstly will prioritize children in kindergarten and elementary school. The announcement will go hand in hand with the relaxation of the mask outdoors, according to official sources told Infobae. The Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós, had promised that, once 7% of the porteños had been fully vaccinated, they would stop requiring the use of masks in open spaces. The mask in schools has been the subject of controversy for some weeks now. The families of Padres Organizados have been demanding that children should be allowed to take off their masks during the school day, at least the youngest ones. In fact, last week, representatives of the parents' collective met with the Minister of Education of Buenos Aires, Soledad Acuña. "We conveyed our concern regarding the use of masks, especially in kindergarten and elementary schools. We provided them with information on the harm caused by the prolonged use of the mask in children, which we have been gathering with data from health professionals and parents", they stated in a communiqué. Parents provided the Ministry with information from other countries that did not require masks for kindergarten and elementary school children, and in some cases not for high school students either. The WHO does not recommend that masks be mandatory in the school environment, unless there is high circulation in the community. "We cannot end the year with children spending up to 8 hours with their masks on while adults can go to bars, discos and courts without wearing them", they claimed.

During the meeting, Minister Acuña hinted at the possibility of liberating the students, firstly, during recess. Although the discussion is not completely settled, there is an agreement to move forward with the youngest students. What has not yet been defined is up to what age it will no longer be required during breaks. In classrooms it will continue to be mandatory. In fact, the school protocol of the City of BA never established that it was mandatory for children in kindergarten, although it did recommend its use. This ambiguity in the wording led many kindergartens to require until today that all children have their mouths and noses covered during the school day. During the pandemic, CABA tended to take the lead in educational openings. The last modification, which was later followed by other provinces, was the adjustment in the concept of "suspected case". Since mid-September, schools stopped isolating entire bubbles for any COVID-19-related symptom until they had a PCR with confirmed infection. This change did not lead to greater contagion in schools. According to official figures, between September 16 and October 15, 14,049 random tests were carried out on students, teachers and non-teachers of public and private secondary schools. Of these, only 3 swabs were positive.

Coronavirus: warning that it could be a seasonal infection. Gathering evidence could help refine health policies for pandemic containment. The perspective of local researchers....Although at the beginning of the pandemic it was believed that climate was not a determining factor, research published by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health provides evidence indicating that covid-19 could be a seasonal infection related to low temperatures and humidity, like the flu. The work, published in Nature Computational Science, took into account the centrality of aerosol transmission and the need to adopt measures related to "air hygiene". Thus, the ventilation of enclosed spaces and the possibility of having CO2 meters could become essential in the coming years....

Climatic signatures in the different COVID-19 pandemic waves across both hemispheres.
...Our results, so far, classify COVID-19 as a seasonal low-temperature infection and suggest an important contribution of the airborne pathway in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, with implications for the control measures we discuss....

Nicolás Kreplak: "The Delta variant begins to be the majority"
The Minister of Health of the province of Buenos Aires, Nicolás Kreplak, referred to the increase in new infections of COVID-19: “We had 20 weeks of decrease in cases and Two weeks ago they stopped falling, we had a week of stability and a second week that began with a slight increase, of approximately 20% ”.

A few months ago a "slight" increase of 20% and majority of cases being Delta variant would have been cause for political hysterics.
Especially in a province where at least 5.000.000 are as yet completely unprotected, especially in poorer communities where at risk persons have more difficulty in accessing vaccines (for example those in the slums who cannot leave their house for fear of robbery or don't have access to transport or unable to go to a vacunatorio during work hours etc.)
