I lived in BsAs for 1 year.. was not really victim of "crime"...except for the few fake bank notes i got.. that being said.... I was always vigilant to not show my phone, cameras etc...
On baexpats... several people in the past have jumped on the opportunity to compare the violence or crime of major US cities to that of BsAs. In the states...crime is reported most of the time...i reckon at least 90% of the time... from petty theft, to murder and rape. From what I have read in Argentine papers... the opposite is the case. Probably only 10%.
Seems...at least if you are an expat you have a 50% chance of falling victim to crime...petty and/or violent..
If you are local...at least from the locals I knew...about the same
yet for some reason...many have said LA, NY etc...are much more dangerous...

Here is a link for statistics on crime in Los Angeles county... the city I have lived in for the last 3 years.

http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/los-angeles/crime/

I have lived for at least 1 year and upwards of 15 in the following cities:

Istanbul, Kitzbuhel, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles & Buenos Aires... and by far... BA had much more crime!

I have friends and relatives in Chicago, LA, Paris, San Francisco, Orlando, Raleigh, Hopkinsville (KY), Carmel (CA), Rock Island and Bloomington (IL), Davenport, Cedar Falls, and Iowa City (IA), Salt Lake City, Atlanta, (and more).

Not one of them has ever been a victim of crime and not one of them has bars or "anti-robo" curtains on their windows (almost all of them live in houses with windows on the ground floor).

Has anyone seen a single house or apartment in BA that doesn't have them?

(I have wood shutters on the windows of my house in Prov. Bs. As. and they aren't just decorative.)

I have to agree.. Everyone i know in BA who is a local has been the victim of crime.. and most of my local friends dont live downtown, but it zona norte, hurlingham, escobar etc, which you would think is safer.. but i only know of 2 who reported the crime, one was a car jacking, the other was men broke into the house and beat up the maid because she did not know where the money was hiden..

In NZ there was a big increase in crime against chinese immigrates a few years back.. It turned out it wasnt that there was more crime, it was that the chinese victims started to trust the NZ police and were reporting crime which in the past they were to scared to report because of threats from the criminals or the mistrust of the police as thats was they were use to in china..

Yes...Marksoc, i read the article...and it is quite biased. It's stats are seemingly based on those of the governments/police...which we surely can agree...are way off...and I think most baexpats, expats and locals will agree..
It's not paranoia when most people in BsAs have been victim to crime...and/or everyone they know has...
I must emphasize... I am only talking about Buenos Aires...
