Dengue in the City of BA

Dengue: Gov't seeks to streamline import procedures to ensure supply of repellents.
The National Ministry of Health brought together the main importing companies and manufacturers of repellents within the framework of the “Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Dengue 2024-2025”. The objective of the meeting was to guarantee the supply of these essential products in the fight against dengue, in an epidemiological context that requires effective prevention measures. According to the health portfolio, it is estimated that the production of repellents will reach 60 million units by the end of 2024....

Dengue Alert: a new strain is already circulating in a region of the country ahead of schedule and is causing concern....The National Ministry of Health confirmed the existence of autochthonous dengue fever in the central region of the country, while the detection of a strain
that had not been recorded in the record epidemic of 2023-24 is cause for concern
.

Local circulation of dengue was reported in the province of Córdoba by the latest National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN). These are two cases of young women whose diagnoses were made on October 15 and are now confirmed. A third imported case of serotype DEN-4 has been added to these cases. The fact that autochthonous cases of dengue have already been detected at this time of the year in the central region, which includes the City of BA and the Province of BA, Córdoba, Santa Fe and Entre Ríos, indicates that there is circulation of the virus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a month earlier than during last year's unprecedented epidemic....The National Meteorological Service (SMN) announced an increase in temperatures and rainfall for the next few days, factors that could favor the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the main vector of dengue fever....

Dengue: when does the Aedes aegypti mosquito bite the most? As the high spring and soon summer temperatures arrive, the insect increases its activity, biting and transmitting the disease that was a record number of cases and deaths caused in the previous season....

....Tips to avoid being bitten and infected. The dengue mosquito is most active between 6:00am and 11:00am, and from 6:00 pm to 9:00pm. Artificial light and temperature affect their survival, behavior, and alters their resting cycle. The bottom line: Aedes aegypti, the transmitter of dengue, bites mainly at dawn and dusk, but can bite at any time if exposed to artificial lights. Its life cycle is adapted to urban environments, where it breeds in stagnant water and seeks humid conditions. Light pollution can modify its circadian rhythm, increasing nocturnal activity and the risk of transmission....

....A study in the United States has shown that artificial light in urban areas alters the natural behavior of insect vectors. Research conducted by Ohio State University suggests that light pollution may modify the circadian rhythm of Aedes aegypti, prolonging its activity period and increasing the risk of bites during the night. This insect breeds in shady and humid places, and although its reproduction has historically been associated with clean water, recent research by the Mosquito Study Group of the UBA and the Conicet has shown that it can also develop in water with organic matter or even in dirty containers. This discovery, published in the Journal of Vector Ecology, implies that any container that accumulates water, no matter how neglected, can become a breeding site....

In Mendoza, they create red mosquitoes to combat dengue. The measure was taken by the Mendoza Institute of Agricultural Health and Quality, in response to the arrival of warmer weather and the ideal climate for the reproduction of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

To combat dengue fever, 10,000 "red mosquitoes" were released in the Bermejo neighborhood of the Guaymallén locality as a test in anticipation of the arrival of the heat....The experiment will be evaluated by the Ministry of Health to determine whether the campaign, which was also carried out in the United States and Mexico, is effective or not.

Experts point out that the released mosquitoes are “sterilized and red-pigmented Aedes Aegypti” to differentiate them, and so that neighbors do not kill them. These mosquitoes do not bite humans. The insects have been irradiated with gamma rays to render them sterile, so that they mate with females, and because they are so numerous, this leads to a reduction in fertility. If the campaign is successful, the initiative would
expand the territory where more of these mosquitoes are released.

ANMAT, the national administration of medicines, food and medical technology, approved the first Argentine test to detect dengue infections. It consists of a kit known as Detect-Ar that will be used to detect the presence of antigens in the sample. It is important to have this specific test since the symptoms are usually similar to other diseases. Furthermore, if the patient is misdiagnosed, he or she may take the wrong medication and worsen the condition. Together with several laboratories, they were able to develop the test based on the needs of the health system. If it has to be done, it will be necessary to go to a clinical analysis laboratory since it requires professionals for its handling
and administration.

Free mosquito repellent from the UBA: when and where to get it. The delivery of the repellent, which was developed and produced by the Pharmaceutical Technology 1 Dept of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry (FFyB) of the UBA, will take place on two days in November:
Thursday 14 and Saturday 16 at 11:00 a.m, in Plaza Houssay.

The university informed that in order to receive the repellent, it will be necessary to make a reservation by sending a WhatsApp message to 11 3758-9941. During these two days there will also be talks on dengue awareness and prevention....

And a short update from PBA: I got the Qdenga (tetravalent, attenuated live virus) vaccine from Vacunar in Las Lomas (Martinez) this morning.

You have to register with them and arrange an appointment on their page (https://vacunar.com.ar/turnos/); rather annoyingly, after reading that they have the vaccine at all of their vaccination centres, only two of them showed appointments available.

You get to sign a consent form, and then the procedure was very professional, with the nurse showing us the sealed and boxed vaccine with the expiration date. Each vaccine was individual, unlike the COVID one where multiple doses are extracted from one vial.

A second dose needs to be applied after 90 days, and then you're good for 5 years.

With OSDE you get a 40% discount on the price (so 60k Pesos per dose per person rather than 100k), and OSDE don't require a prescription (maybe other insurers do).

There are also free Dengue vaccinations available from CABA and PBA, but you have to see if you meet the requirements (we don't).
