How long can you drive on a US driver's license in Argentina once you are approved for a Pensionado Visa? What documents do they require if you switch it over to Argentina? Also, is there an eye exam, or a written test? If there is a written exam, what is it on? Do they allow you to keep your US license, or do they take it?

A piece of Advise, this is old data. Check into it. Become a member of the ACA for three months only. They could assist in getting the Arg DV, in some cases the tests could be taken at their facility at Libertador.

I believe that you can "legally" drive for up to 90 days after you recieve your temporary residency, but, in order to be sure that a claim involving Argentine insurance coverage would not be denied, I would advise against driving without the Argentine licence. I am certain that you will be able to keep your US licence.

I was thinking to convert my driving license as well, and by the way holding an Italian one I fall into the group (together with Spain), where conversion is just bureaucratic, so I don't need to take any exams.
The reason I did not go through is that I have read online that the duration of the license is tied to the duration of the residency permit, so in my case one year maximum, as I am in my first year as resident. Is what I have read correct in your opinion?

That is correct, it's the shorter of 10 years or the validity of your residency.
