Driving in Argentina. International License??

You're right. It's Spain and Italy, not Spain and England. I could have avoided the driver's test and just taken the theoretical exam if the DMV in NY had sent me a document certifying the legality of my US driver's license, and that would have taken a week to arrive, another week to get translated plus the cost, and a few more days and more cost to get the translation certified in the Colegio de Traductores Publicos. It was far less expensive and time consuming to wait four extra hours and take the practical portion of the driver's test than two weeks for the paperwork, translation and certification to be ready to present. Someone with a contact in Dirección de Licencias de Conducir offered to get me in and out in a matter of a couple of hours rather than suffer all day, for $800 pesos. I chose to pack a lunch and book and wait it out.

I just renewed my driving licence today in Olivos, which is one of the least painful tramites I've ever done here.
If it's of any help, I originally got my Arg licence in 2008 by simply going to the centre in Olivos with the British licence (which oddly has a term of 50 years) and the whole thing was processed in 45 mins at a cost of around $65.
The major prerequisite was permanent residency and no test was required other than an eye test.
On this occasion I had missed the expiry date by 7 days, but was within the 30 day limit and there were no problems renewing it.
They even added motorbikes to the categories, which had been omitted previously, so now I'll be legal again.
It's a lot slicker than before and very well organised and I pick the licence up next week as they come from La Plata.
Cost this time $300.
I forgot to mention that it helps to book your turn online and print the stuff out before you go.

I drove to cordoba and back in march, got pulled but my Irish license was ok. I would feel better with a local version so I think I will do the test.

The cops in Cordoba are everywhere on the road and they have radars. When you pass theough Santa Fe you can relax but keep your eyes open, lights on and stay at the limit in Cordoba.

Ps...the motorway from Rosario to Cordoba is very straight and very boring!

I have driven through every Argentine province with my California license, and nobody has ever questioned it. Likewise in Chile.

I've been stopped on my bike, by the police more times than I've had hot dinners.
On each and every occasion I am pinged for not having bikes on my Argentine licence, but I manage to get by with my Brit licence which I carry as a backup.
Bikes are targeted, no question, so this will make life a bit less stressful when I see the roadblock ahead.

Do you have a paper license or a photographic one?

I've been thinking of getting a license here as most places aren't keen on my old paper license (which you now need to replace in the uk before 2015 or something) I'm unable to replace it as i don't live in the uk and they won't let me replace it remotely.

old paper licenses here have a photo. new ones look just like a credit card

Ejcot mate, I've got the small plastic UK licence and the paper 'counterpart' which I've flashed at the police here on numerous occasions with great success.
I'll replace those when I'm next in the UK (next year with any luck).

Ajo ,

I am sure with a little study , you can pass the Argentine drivers test. Although you may have some difficulty with the psychological evaluation part of the test.........
