Excited/scared About Moving To Ba...!

I agree with Stevensonie. My thoughts are that anyone who requests that you pay in US$ is trying to take advantage of your lack of knowledge about the situation here....paying in us$ is a thing of the past now. If you do have dollar$ to burn, then you are the 'Boss' & you can bargain them down....and yes you'll be able to buy US$ at the blue rate.

I don't know how long you'll be staying in BA. But it gets very cold here in Winter. Freezing Cold !!!.
So if you're going to be staying through August, you may want to pack cold weather clothing.
Of course you can buy them here but clothes are kind of expensive. If not sure what area to live,
I would head for San Telmo. It's hip. funky & laid back. Not as expensive as Palermo. and it's near the subway.

One Warning... I met an American guy here though craigslist. I bought his heater.
He came for four months & staid for four years. Last year he moved back to LA because of a job offer. :)

Hi!

I'm moving to Buenos Aires in a couple of months and up until yesterday I was ridiculous excited about my move! But... I've been doing some research and it seems like it's nearly impossible to exchange ARS back to USD once I'm ready to come home??? I'll be working as an English teacher, getting paid in ARS, but paying rent in USD... PLEASE BE HONEST AND TELL ME IF I'M MAKING A MISTAKE!!!

The only solutions I've found online were somehow related to two things: HSBC and account in Uruguay. Can someone help me understand how exactly having an HSBC account or account in Uruguay would help my situation with exchanging ARS into USD?

I love to travel and I'm really not looking to make any money while I'm in Buenos Aires, but I would hate to leave such a beautiful country with a bunch of money I can't use...

Thanks in advance for your help!
There will not be much pesos left when you leave the country. An Argie friend told me that $100 pesos is as good as sh*t quickly. It's worthless money, that's why landlords do
not want to accept it.You will be lucky if you can earn enough pesos for a living in BsAs. Earning enough pesos to cover all your living expenses in BA is considered a success, bringing pesos home to beyond ..
pesos back to US is beyong

Its not too cold here in the winter, not compared to london. You will need a warm coat for about a month and a half of the year though.

I would check out the barrios for yourself. I lived in San Telmo for a bit but got sick of being surrounded by tourists and its not the safest place in BA, not that BA is that dangerous, so don't let that put you off. Non of the bars there have many people in them before midnight.

Everyone has their favourite barrio. I like Almagro. A lot of expats and young Argentineans like Palermo and thats where the majority of night life is, but can be a bit 'plastic'.

I will go for palermo or recoleta, but of course there are plenty of diferent neighboars depending what is your preference, but for young people that want to be in the party spot Palermo is the way ;)

Thanks EVERYONE for your wonderful comments! I'm definitely excited about moving, just want to sort out all the kinks before I can fully enjoy the anticipation!!!

I did reserve the apartment for only 1 month, in case it was not a good idea. Thank goodness I did that! I would like to live in San Telmo with the locals to truly soak up the authenticity, and security is my own concern when it comes to renting a place (since I'm traveling alone). If anyone knows any decent apartments for 1 in San Telmo that accepts pesos, PLEASE PLEASE let me know!!!

Thanks again for all of your helpful info!

San Telmo is a decent neighborhood with lots to offer. You might consider renting a room rather than an entire apartment. It has gotten quite expensive down here and rent can quickly consume your income to the point that you won't have much left for any fun.
Just check out the offers on Craigslist and you will get an idea of the prices in the neighborhood.

How about converting pesos to dollars (not cash just to my american bank account) to pay back my student loans while I'm working here as a teacher?

Iamarque's advice is good. I wouldn't say San Telmo is authentic, quite the opposite. Check out other parts of the city and have fun!!! Enjoy!
