Amsam, I too have used my passport number instead of DNI on the reservation and had no problem on a flight to Iguazu. If I remember correctly, there is an extra number on US passport which I just left off the form.
It seemed at the time that the people at the gate had no interest in how the ticket was purchased, which makes sense.
If you want to have departure/arrival times you can count on, stay away from AerolineasAR.
Expatinowncountry mentioned above 'the millions each year that Aerolineas AR looses,' I believe it is more like millions each day! Recently I had friends flying from Miami at the same time as I. Their AerolineasAR flight was perhaps 25% of occupancy while my flight on Lan was completely full.
