Getting A Dog

OK, here go the photo + vidéo.

I talked about this dog like 3 months ago & got a bit scared when introducing him to my other dogs. Finally I had decided not to take care of him but I found him the same afternoon venturing around Ruta 8, nearby my gated community. Finally (bis), I decided I would give it a try and brought him back again (would have felt stupid to find his dead body on ruta 8).

He spent those last months with me & my other dogs but the issue about domination was still there. There was a first fight (at night) between him and one of my males about 3 weeks later (he lost, don't know who started the fight). Then there was a second fight, I still kept him but my 2 males then decided to make his life impossible (normal... that's their house). Then there was a third fight and he was about to kill one of my males (he's damn strong) so I placed him in front of my house about a month ago and he stays there since.

I know him very very well now, and despite his dominant behaviour (like any male) towards other males, he's a sweetie pie with humans. He's always looking for hugs, takes something to eat from your hand without biting (video), it's possible to take away his food while he's eating (video), he's an excellent guardian and is quite impressive (massive, nice muscles, loud voice, runs fast, etc.). He's also obedient, keeps constantly looking at your eyes to communicate, etc. He's psychologically balanced (no 'dangerous' fears, etc.).

I saw him with kids the other day, they were giving him hugs and he loved that.

As I said in a previous message, I wouldn't have spent so much time trying to find a family if he was a bad dog (that would have been way easier for me), but I just couldn't leave him like this.

That's obvious he's wishing a lot to be with a family, in his house, on his territory.

Only issue he has : he loves sofas, mattresses & such. But that's quite a common default...

If anyone is interested, I can bring him for a try. I can take him back anytime (but I'd bet quite many bucks that trying him is... keeping him.)

Video (I know, I talk to him like if he was a baby, lol) - you can see he takes food from your hand in a very delicate way, it's possible to take away his food, etc. :

Oh do I wish I could take him. But my existing jealous bitch and feisty cat would never accept him.:(. What a competent and thorough description you gave! But I understood your dilemma. I experienced the same thing with a macho (believe it or not) CHIHUAHUA who would've referred death than to give up his rivalry with another male that I owned. He was a beautiful dog but I had to place him in another home. Trying to keep him away from the others didn't work with little kds forgetting to keep him apart. You've done a great job with him. By the way is he neutered? That often helps with male dominance issues...

I don't think he's neutered.

Look! Easy enough to see! That could make a HUGE difference. I couldn't neuter that chihuahua cuz he was a champion show dog ! Ask your vet what he thinks.( the sac of a neutered male is flat, shriveled and barely visible.) Good luck!

I second that. Neutering lowers the testosterone levels, have other health benefits and just makes sense unless there's a very special reason not to.

My rescued male used to pick fights in the park before I got him neutered, he's much more relaxed outside and inside now.

Note that even neutered males will most likely still fight if they are uncertain about who "rules the household" (i.e; "pack leader", "alpha" etc), so you still have to do the work.

Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase a Papillon? I have had owned them in the past but not here in Argentina. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. walter

His/her future 'owner' will take care of that.

@splaying
Out of curiosity, I searched the net for a criadero de papillon, and it seems there are none (at least on Internet, no trace of this breed on Mercadolibre neither, even in the past) in Argentina. There are in Chile & Brazil.

Quite complete directory
http://www.criaderosde.com/

I have a pure breed myself but that's the first time in my life I have one (always rescued dogs).

This puppy is available for instance (not from me, from another person. Contact info on request). Some people make a real traffic out of dog breeding.

I highly recommend you take a look at this website. This is where people post lost dogs and dogs they find for adoption. i'ts well known sites. there used to be more websites, but they are no longer functioning. this website is updated constantly. every day you will see new dogs.

I agree, adopting a pet from an animal shelter is better than buying one... And as it has been said, there are a number of places you can adopt from, here are the animal rescue groups I know of:

And here is some advice on the subject:

Good luck!

Another one updated daily:

(also a great resource for lost dogs)

Lots on mercadolibre too, you can search perros en adopcion. There are also some great breeders in the area, but plenty of shady ones so definitely watch out.

Also, if you get a puppy--- parvo and other diseases are kinda out of control here. I did much of my preliminary research on shots and whatnot in english (US based) and then realized that info doesn't really apply here, apparently you're supposed to be even more cautious.
