Good places to live?

I am not a real estate salesperson, however I do have some good friends that are and have helped them with many transactions ranging from temporary rentals to sales. Not complaining at all, just making a statement. As neighborhoods in the center of Buenos Aires become more and more congested and expensive, more people of all kinds will gravitate to the outer barrios of Buenos Aires. I myself did a stint in Microcentro and Barrio Norte and after I didn't want to deal with the constant noise and congestion I looked for other options. I expect others to follow suit. Cheers!

Hey Everyone,

I am a 27 year old guy hoping to move to BA in March. I have been looking at different areas within BA to live in. Some names have come up more frequently (online) than others, but I would definitely like some insider advice.
As I will be new to the city, I would be looking for somewhere quite cosmopolitan, with lots of different restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, and shops (a gym would be great, too). Good transport would be great as well. It'd also be good to have a place where there is a reasonable number of expats (my Spanish is alright, but it'd probably be easier to make some English Speaking friends initially, just so my Spanish can get up to speed). A park or two would also be great.

I know am asking 'how long is a piece of string?' but seeing as about a million other people have done the same thing before, hopefully someone can give me an answer.

I appreciate any feedback - so thanks in advance.

Peaceful, good transport, parks, great nightlife and restaurants but without being a tourist mecca. Got everything you are looking for by the sounds of things.

I live in a neighborhood called La Imprenta which often gets 'smushed in' with Las Cañitas. but it's a lot quieter and, dare i say it outloud?, a bit more upscale. As a woman living alone i feel very safe here - even when i'm arriving home at 2 or 3 AM on the colectivo. there are a huge number of shops, 2 supermarkets, countless restaurants, 9 colectivo lines; it's 4 blocks from the Olleros "D" subte, and two blocks from the Lisandro de la Torre train which puts you at Retiro in 7 minutes, or in Tigre in 40 minutes. The entrance to Bosques de Palermo (which aren't woods but a park) is just a stone's throw from my apartment. But like a previous post said i'm not 27 (more like double that) and i prefer a quieter and tonier place. i couldn't be happier. ¡buena suerte!

if you are 27 san telmo is great. but not every area is safe and for those people who don't know the 'códigos', it's better to rent in Palermo, or as someone else suggested, in Belgrano.

I lived in BsAs for 6 months in 2007 and loved living in the centre of the city. I had friends in Las Canitas and Belgrano and they liked both areas, but tended to get a bit beached in the winter. They envied my very central apartment between Corrientes and Callao, just a stroll away from bustling streets day and night. That said, for longer stays it may be a relief to find somewhere slightly more calm and suburban, especially during hot summer days. Recoleta, Barrio Norte, and Sn Nicholas are good. My ideal location for walking to most places would be Plaza Vincente Lopez, so any radius from here is superb (check it out on Google Maps).

On a limited budget, bear in mind that taxis are relatively cheap so travel to the city from Palermo, Amagro, Belgrano and other barrios is an economic alternative to staying in the centre. Finding apartments is challenging, due to the number on offer, but visit Craigs List for ideas. For apartments, Recoleta, Barrio Norte, Retiro and Sn Nicholas are good. My ideal location would be Plaza Vincente Lopez, so any radius from here is superb.

On the choice of apartments, remember that Summer is hot and humid in BsAs, so air conditioning is absolutely essential, and north facing rooms are preferred. Rooms facing the street can be noisy from traffic, but animated, and rooms at the rear are quieter and sometimes dull. Hope this is of help. And I would adopt a lot of the advice that others have given earlier, so I suppose it comes down to personal choice, trial and error!

hallo, i've been living in Villa ortuzar ( next to Chacarita) for the past 3 months and after a beggining filled with doubt and remorse,i am now very happy to be here. It's quiet, low buildings and large pavements,little park nearby, a very useful Jumbo 3 blocks away, subay station at Tronador and lots of busses,and very argentinian!
I think what neighbourhood you'll live in depends a lot on how much you want to spend on rent. Palermo, canitas and s.telmo were all far tooooo expensive for me.

Hi Garrett,

I live in Retiro (at the corner of Plaza San Martin) in a huge apartment with 6 bedrooms. Only two bedrooms are occupied (myself and a woman from the US). The apartment is great and the location perfect. If you are interested I could put you in touch with the landlady. There is a great room available with its own bath and bacony for about $450 per month.

Quick answer for MrBart. Some people adore the edgy feel of San Telmo. If you dance tango it has a number of attractions due to the proximity of excellent milongas (esp Humberto 1st), with quite a number of tango houses bringing in tourists. Defensa and Plaza Dorrego are huge fun on Sundays, but during the week have less animation. At night some of the streets that are busy during the day become soulless. Unless you are able and planning to integrate into the local community quickly, I would go for places where you are more likely to socialise with other visitors.
