Uh, Joe. I would never store anything in my house that I had not inspected first. Stop being so "American." The world is not full of good-willed, honest people. :)

"Stop being so American"? Excuse me, Americans grosso modo are people infected by a terrible sense of horror, of being afraid for everything in life and specially for unknown people.

If the person has not responded with an excuse yet via email or Forum, he may come up with a plausible story , like he was hit by a car and was in intensive care or he was kidnapped ?? So for the time being I will refrain from calling The person names, since we may have him back among us??

I plan to publish the name, email address, email transcripts, photos and everything unless it's against forum rules - later this week.

...

I haven't looked in the bags yet - too depressed :(. But I will do that next week and photograph the contents. Maybe you'll see some items that mysteriously disappeared! Of course if there are a couple of iPad Airs in there I will have nothing to complain about! How likely is that?

Look in those bags, now!! You don't want anymore trouble. Hell, I'd sell the contents and dump them on the street at this point if I were you. And publish his/her name, please. Don't protect the jerk. Go read the forum terms of service. I don't think it mentions anything about publishing people's real names. That's more of a forum etiquette thing IMO, but clearly the time for etiquette has passed since you are out $1000.

I gave him until the evening of Aug 22nd (this Friday) to return my money or go public with his personal details. So I won't reveal his name and other details (full name, email transcripts, BAexpat ID, nationality, hometown and photo) until this Friday evening.

I was wondering if any of our budding documentary makers would be interested in making a documentary on this? We have expats involved in a scam, the blue dollar, secret contents of bags revealed on film, trip to Uruguay to interview the culprit. What do you think?

Joe ,

I have mentioned my friends , Guido and Giovanni , from Sicily , who are very good at persuading people to do the right thing. They are very reasonable and always get results. They even contribute to the local economy too. Especially with doctors , hospitals and such........

There's no real reason to panic yet. This expat can google the name of "Florencia Marina Daud" and see what's coming, among other things, if there's malice intended. Let's hope for Joe & this expat that this situation gets resolved quickly.

If there's a situation where, despite our differences, we are united, it's really this one... Those threads also are the most popular ones usually :p

Yes. I talked to an Argentine friend and they said I had to look in the bags because there could be drugs or arms that could get me in jail. I mentioned this to the owner/grifter and he gave me permission to look in the bags but I still haven't got the energy to go through what I presume is a lot of crap in two giant duffle bags.

or bed bugs. had it in my apartment when first moved in. :) the landlords did not know. They had an backpacker from Israel before me. :)

Well I don't do films but I really think this is a great idea. I would take it step further, use the guy as an example of what is apparently a growing problem in our times. The Internet, with the ability to be anonymous or perhaps collect identify bits from others and create fake personas aids it and our various world leaders with their displays of lawlessness and dishonesty make it seem like its ok to lie and cheat.
Would be an interesting study to try and find out just how much scams are on the rise, and then document some to spread the word.

Joe -

I am really sorry to hear that you are going through this. Having met you personally while I was going through my own experience, I can tell that you are a good guy. You are lucky to have built up enough BAExpats forum credit for people to know immediately that you are the one in the right in this situation - I didn't have that, and the reactions to our situations were initially very different.

I wish you all the best with this, and trust that between the offers of help and your own good heart + good judgement you will get what you need out of this. Don't let your interaction with someone like this change who you are as a person - that is a much higher price to pay and it is never worth it to let someone else have that kind of power over you when ultimately the choice is in your own hands.
