Neil, Interesting results. :) I see your Fibertel is being routed through "Cablevision SA", while ours is through "Prima SA". Maybe that explains the speed difference. Our cable modem service was originally called "Flash" (by Multicanal), but then Multicanal got merged with Cablevision, and they now call it Fibertel. Perhaps they are the same by name now, but ours is still using a different (slower?) network.

Is there any ISP or service level that will improve on those upload numbers on a consistent basis? I would even consider a commercial grade service. I am flexible on price points. How frequent are system down times, for any of the services referenced in this post? Any information would be helpful. TIA.

HDM and Captdave stop saying gigs, it's Mb/s or Megabits, only in some places in Japan they have 2 Gb (or 2 gigabits) of download speed!

And I have 1 Mb/s using Fibertel, download speed is consisten and I never have any issues with it.

Keep in mind that ALL internet service providers differ in speed quality depending on what barrio you live in, Fibertel works great in Barrio Norte for example and it could be the worst ISP in Flores, so the best bet is to ask your neighbors or friends who live nearby

Does any of the internet providers offer a 3G wireless modem internet access that plugs into a USB port on your laptop. I'm looking for a backup solution in case we have to rent an apartment that accepts a dog, but doesn't have internet installed.

And if there is such a service, what kind of hoops do I have to jump through to get it. Here in Rio my Brazilian girlfriend had to sign for it because I'm an estrangeiro and couldn't jump through all of the hoops necessary to prove I'm a good person. Even though I'm a permanent resident. I find here in Rio that I sometimes need two internet solutions in order to have one that is working.

And if there is wireless internet, any information on what speed and price I could expect?

Thanks

I have Sinectis. Great service, I have only 1 Mb but it always works, in my suburban area tehre seems to be less subscribers so there are no problems with overselling the bandwitch, and they do not throttle P2P programs (as Bittorrent). They tried to do it, but after a week they desisted, I suppose that they like their clients more.

My house is quite large, and wireless signals are hard to pass throught the thick stone walls, so I have been using Arnet on one side of the house and Fibertel at the other.

You should consider buying another wireless router.

I believe the worlds fastest broadband connection is in Sweden:

Yes, they have both pre-paid or contract based. Prepaid is much more expensive tho.

Claro:
http://internetmovil.claro.com.ar/ (prepaid, $100 / 10 days)

http://www.claro.com.ar/3g/index.html (contract, $129/mo unlimited)

Personal:
http://www.personal.com.ar/servicios/datos/internet_movil_prepago.html (prepaid, $49 / 7 days)

http://www.personal.com.ar/servicios/datos/internet_movil_factura.html (contract, $119/mo unlimited)

Movistar:
http://www.movistar.com.ar/3g/prepago_paquetes.html (prepaid, $10/day)

http://www.movistar.com.ar/3g/pospago_planes_xmescontrato.html (contract, $199/mo unlimited)

But you have to be careful with the fine print on all of those services. Also 3g service around the city and province can be spotty, so it might be worth trying the prepaid one time to test the service in your neighborhood, before getting locked into a contract.

Good luck! ;)
