In about a quarter of Democratic districts, 18 percent or more of all households received food stamps. That was true in just 6 percent of Republican districts.
It is a pointless discussion. The NYT is trying to find causation where there is none. Up until the mid-1960s, the South was overwhelmingly Democrat, and yet was even poorer than it is today. Just look up the term Solid South. I could use the same argument to point out that Detroit became overwhelmingly Democrat during the mid-1960s and from there it turned from the 3rd wealthiest city is the US to the largest city bankruptcy in the history of the US. The reality is that the poverty in the South has nothing to do with which party is in power.
Both parties are out there to screw you, and anyone who believes otherwise is just naive and can't comprehend current politics.
