The Pope Is Argentine

Im actually happy they chose him. I know everyone loves to be against the church, religion etc and jokes are easy to make, so i wasnt expecting much else on here, but i - for as far as i can say anything with the little that i know about him - like him, and wish him good luck with a difficult job.
At least he likes Juan D'Arienzo

And I wish the BBC would just let it go.
This has been the headline all day long.
No hidden agenda of course, no no no,

Talking of which, when he was elected the other day it was announced by the railway station announcer lady who is usually sounding depressed by late trains or cancellations.
But not this time as she shouted 'El Papa es Argentino!'
So when I got home, I recanted this story at dinner but put the accent on the first A, so it came out as 'The potato is Argentine!'
There were guffaws all round.

There's a lot of Argentines on Social media spreading the rumours he was involved, on this forum too!

The Guardian ran a story a few days ago, the BBC is just catching up.

It's good to pay attention to sensitive issues, but I don't see how this man could have had any major influence in Argentina while being so young.

You're probably right, but he wasn't a teenager. He was ~40 years old.

I am more referring to the lack of a career at that point, so he was relatively young. A cardinal during that era should have been held accountable for being too passive under a dictatorship, but I mean, we are talking about approximately 1980. But anyway, I do not want to take sides in this wider media story, I think there should be more attention for prison guards and nazi style torturers who are still unpunished. I was glad about what happened to Videla last year, but there are still too many rats walking around.

I saw this 'cute', very old man at a milonga once. Afterwards someone told me this gentleman had a relatively important role in the army during the dictatorship. Argentina is a weird place, but what's new?
